Selling Out

“This can’t take too long. I’ve got band practice on Monday nights.”

“Who plays music on a Monday night?”

“Once upon a time, we were always too hungover to do anything else.”

Lou shook his head. “Sounds about right.”

“Hey man, my car’s this way.”

“No, it’s not.” But he followed anyway.

Before I met up with Lou, I’d moved my car to its new assigned spot. Lou’s eyes went wide when I flashed my badge before the entrance to the high-security lot beneath the building.

“No!” Lou dug his fingertips into his temples. Hammer Tech had already engraved a nameplate behind my Ford.

“How the fu…” He cut himself off, probably realizing the number of cameras and mics down here. “How did this happen? I spent years trying to get usable reports out of you on time. Do you know how many times you’ve embarrassed me to middle-management? How many times they’ve scolded me for shit you pulled?”

“Aw. Thanks for trying to make me feel better. I’ve been a little nervous about this job since Pete Obrecht himself handed me the position.”

“Let’s just go.” He slammed the door after plopping down hard.

“Hey man, I didn’t mistreat your Maserati.”

“Fair enough. I don’t know why you’d put so much money into this dinosaur.”

“It’s the same year as your last car.”

“Yeah, but it was a Maserati.”

“Ha. Was.”

“Fuck you.”

I pulled out onto a quiet backstreet and made for King of Prussia. Lou sat there and moped for most of the trip, until curiosity finally got the better of him.

“So, what’d they do to you? Some kind of mind augmentation? Reflex enhancement? You’re definitely not you.”

“I mean, pretty much. I’m still adapting and a ways off from the advanced functions. It’s been pretty subtle compared to other stuff we’ve seen come out of that basement.”

“Okay, but it’s definitely a gene-splice, right?”

“Yeah. Extensive. You’ll get your money.”

“I don’t know, man. Maurice is a flake.”

“Then he doesn’t pay us, whatever.”

“I’m not the one who got two raises this year.”

“Christ Lou, I’m not trying to fuck you over, okay? I got the mods like you wanted. Don’t act like I’m not playing along.”

The fat man crossed his arms over his gut. “Fair enough.”

I parked the car near a poorly aged section of the mall. A few cars had been sitting there for ages. Lou watched me stick my gun in the center console on top of another gun, but I couldn’t read his reaction. He closed my door, this time with a little more care. Hopefully, if I made a contact, I could cut the bastard out of the picture. Unlikely though. If he gets a fat payout, he’ll try to keep me around, even with his lack of leverage.

The Arab dude, Maurice, waved us right into the back.

“Have you had any complications since the splice?”

“Yeah. Almost made me go insane. No hyperbole.”

“I believe you. Lou insists it’s for a defense contract. Let’s see.”

I laid through the same scans as before while Maurice watched stone-faced. I had no clue what to make of him. He sounded like an Arab, but had a directness I’d expect from an Asian businessman.
