HOW DO CROOKS GO PHISHING?

Potential victims receive an e-mail that appears to come from a bank, Internet service provider, or other well-known or reputable agency.

The e-mail message describes an urgent reason why the recipients must verify or resubmit passwords or other confidential information by clicking on a link embedded in the message. Facebook scams originate with an invitation from a “friend” to click on a link to see a funny video.

Clicking on the link will take the victims to a Web site that appears to be legitimate, but which was actually set up by the scammer.

Once at the Web site, the victims are asked to provide passwords, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or other identification that might be useful.

If the victims provide the information, the scammers can take over their e-mail accounts or other personal accounts.
