Eleven: The Cage and the Key
THE SUNSHINE WOKE Felix up.
It took him several moments to recognize the light for what it was. First, he assumed it was the television set, except the glow of this light was constant, not flickering. Was he perhaps under a streetlamp? No, this light was warmer than that. But then again, it couldnât be sunlight, because he was currently not on fire.
He blinked sleepily as he puzzled out the situation. He sat up and took in his surroundings. He was on the beach, laid out on the golden sand under an impossibly blue sky. He held his hand up in the light and examining it. No, it was certainly not on fire.
âA dream,â he finally concluded. âIâm having a dream!â This itself was also odd, seeing as he had not had a dream since heâd died. However, a dream seemed more plausible than any of the alternatives that he could think of.
He stood up and stretched. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he was aware that in the waking world he was desperately unhappy about something, but for now, the day was beautiful and the sun was warm. He smiled; it felt good.
He decided to take a walk. He strolled along for some time, letting the soft crash of the waves along the shore soothe him. He wondered how long it would be before he woke up. He hoped it would be a long time.
Gradually, he became aware of a noiseâan uneven, metallic clanking, coming from somewhere ahead of him in the distance. He sped up his walking; before long, he came upon a woman sitting cross-legged under the shade of a palm tree. She wore faded jean shorts and a bright yellow tank top. Her long blond curls were pulled back in a messy ponytail. In one hand, she held a crowbar. She was using it to pry at something she held in her lap.
She looked up. As soon as she saw Felix, she smiled widely and got to her feet, leaving the object she had been tinkering with on the ground as she bounded over to him. She was extremely pretty, but there was something strange about her: she had scars on her wrists, her elbows, her knees, her ankles, and her neck. It was like she had been stitched together, like a rag doll.
She gave him a quick squeeze, as if they were old friends. Her smile was dazzling; Felix wasnât usually susceptible to feminine charms, but this young woman was delightful. She took him by the hand and led him over to the tree. She gestured at the object. Now that he was closer, Felix could see what it was. It was an empty birdcage.
âAre you trying to open that?â he asked.
She nodded and held out the crowbar.
âYou want my help?â
She nodded again.
He bowed. âI would be delighted to assist you, but I have no need of a crowbar.â He picked up the cage and tore the door open quite easily.
