What If I’m Out of Work?

“I don’t care about having the perfect job. I’ll take any job. I need work!” That’s probably what you’re thinking as you hear about making the best of your job. Never mind the “perfect” part—you’d be happy just to have a job to make the best of.

If you’re out of work, keep in mind four truths:

(1) You still have a sweet spot. Unemployment doesn’t change who you are. To be sure, your self-esteem can take a blow when you can’t find work. But God made you, with all of your gifts and talents, long before you became unemployed. He made you as you are for a purpose. Don’t let temporary setbacks allow you to doubt that.

(2) The reason you are out of work may have nothing to do with your giftedness. The unemployed person is tempted to think, “There’s something wrong with me. That’s why I’m out of work. I’m not smart enough, strong enough, energetic enough, creative enough, or whatever.” Stop! The voice telling you that is not the Lord’s. So don’t keep listening to that voice. Instead, accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world, and there is no such thing as guaranteed employment. Economies run in cycles. Businesses fail. Companies change. Markets require different ways of doing business. None of that is a reflection of who you are. Adjust to the ebb and flow of employment as best you can, but don’t disparage your giftedness.

(3) It is a biblical admonition to provide for your family. One reason God gives us work is so that we can meet our material needs (2 Thess. 3:6–12). That means we need to do what we can to find work that meets our needs. If your situation is desperate, you shouldn’t hold out for the absolutely perfect job. Take a job and do it faithfully, all the while keeping your eyes open for a better job-fit when it comes along. And above all. . .

(4) Trust God. That can be hard to do when there are bills to pay and no income with which to pay them. But consider this: God is less interested in our material comfort than in our spiritual vitality. It may be that he allows us to be out of work sometimes in order to get our attention, and to get our eyes refocused on him. Are you looking for him in the midst of your job search?
