The Jeep dipped and rolled as Schofield maneuvered it down a rutted dirt road through the forest. Raquel was pressed up between the two front seats, her camera capturing all. Nina crouched behind her, holding on to the waistband of Raquelâs shorts to keep her steady. Vanessa leaned forward in the passenger seat, peering into the darkness ahead.
âThe bartender said it should be hereâ¦â
The forest ended abruptly and Schofield eased the Jeep to a stop. He left the headlights burning as they stepped out and surveyed the area. Large hills of rotting sargassum, at least twenty feet high, stretched away as far as the eye could see. Large rodents fled from the pools of light thrown by the headlights, causing the surface of the mounds to squirm. Clouds of flies swarmed over the masses of rotting seaweed, wings buzzing as they circled. Nina coughed and held her shirt over her nose. Vanessa did the same. Raquelâs eyes began to water but she never stopped shooting. Schofield had smelled worse, but not by much. The road continued down through the sargassum, straight as a razorâs edge.
âIt seems to go on forever,â Nina said, her voice muffled. âDoesnât it?â
Vanessa picked up a rock and tossed it at writhing clump of rats nearby, causing them to scatter with angry squeals of protest. She moved closer and knelt, tugging at some of the matted seaweed. Raquel moved in, her camera light spearing through the dark, throwing long, undulating shadows.
A single pale foot jutted from under the mass, the flesh shrunken and gnawed by small, sharp teeth. The toes were curled up and painted with chipped pink nail polish.
âOh God,â Nina said, her voice catching.
Raquel lowered her camera, the bright light mounted on top winking out as she turned. âJesus, Vanessa. What the fuck?â
âI know,â Vanessa said, her expression tight.
âThere could be dozens of bodies here,â Raquel continued. âHundreds. Iâd say we should go to the police or the military, but something this bigâ¦theyâre either bought off or involved.â
Vanessa nodded. âGet some more footage then letâs get out of here. Iâll figure out what to do about it later.â
âWe canât,â Nina said, wheeling on Vanessa. âThis is too big. Theyâll get to us even if weâre back in the states. Remember what happened to Rodrigo?â
âWe donât know for sure if his death was cartel related,â Vanessa said. âThe police said it was a robbery.â
âBullshit, Vanessa. You know better. Thieves usually steal the family jewels, not cut them off and stuff them into your mouth,â Raquel said before turning away and walking further down the road, shooting more footage of the sargassum mounds. Nina gazed at Vanessa a moment longer, her large eyes shining in the dark before she turned to follow Raquel.
Schofield stood, staring at the undulating mountains of rotting seaweed. He hadnât said a word since theyâd arrived. Vanessa went over and touched his arm.
âWe donât know that Jordan is here,â she said, her voice soft.
Schofield nodded, jaw bunching as his eyes swept over the massive dumping ground.
