The province of Matanzas has Varadero, one of the most popular resort areas in Cuba, with 20 km/12 miles of beach and the Zapata Peninsula, now a national park, where millions of birds stop on their way north and south during their migrations. The city of Matanzas has about 120,000 residents and is supported mainly by industry.

The name Matanzas means "mass murder” in Spanish and there are two theories about its origin. First, the name may have been given after the Spaniards came and killed many of the indigenous people living here. The other theory is that a lot of domestic animals in the area were killed before being shipped elsewhere for consumption.
