Squash and Stretch
Real-world objects have mass and volume. When real objects move, they reveal their rigidity. Squash and stretch shows an object’s rigidity by exaggerating its deformation as it moves.
Organic objects aren’t completely rigid. They’re softer and more malleable. Man-made objects tend to be more stiff and rigid. When organic objects move in a stiff and rigid way, they don’t look right. That’s not how they behave in real life. Squash and stretch lets the animation respond as the objects would in the real world.
For example, a bouncing ball flattens when it hits the ground (squash) and then elongates (stretch) in the direction it moves after it bounces. How much the ball squashes and stretches depends on its rigidity and its speed and acceleration when it hits the ground and bounces (FIGURE 5.1).
