I told you it was a high standard! (If you’re feeling bad for the fellas right about now, don’t worry; it will be our turn to get grilled in the next chapter.)

Some of those qualities are a little tough to gauge, right? How do you know whether the guy you’re interested in will be able to teach the Word or have control over his kids when that’s, like, way in the future? Proverbs 20:11 says, “Even a young man is known by his actions—if his behavior is pure and upright” (HCSB). A person’s actions tell the story. If a sixteen-year-old or twenty-five-year-old guy is known to act “pure and upright,” he’ll probably continue to grow in purity and righteousness when he’s thirty or forty or even ninety. Present character is a pretty good indicator of future character. Obviously the Holy Spirit is at work in every Christian, making us more like Jesus with each passing birthday. We’re works in progress. But don’t underestimate the importance of godly character today. You want to look for a guy who is modeling Christlikeness now; then there will be a really good chance that you’ll have a godly leader in the distant tomorrow.

Have I mentioned that those qualifications for church leaders set the standard really high? You might be wondering whether there are any guys who would fit that description. Let me assure you that, yes, there are guys like this out there. They are the minority, sure, but the girl who is willing to wait for God’s timing and plan for her love story won’t be disappointed. Let me say again, don’t expect perfection. Your Prince Charming will be a royal sinner! I don’t want to stress “spiritual leader” so much that I backhandedly create unrealistic expectations. He might not pastor a church, rise before dawn to lead his family in devotions, or become a missionary. The character qualities in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1–2 are not negotiable for church leaders (they are absolutely necessary), but they’re guidelines for finding a husband, not hard-and-fast rules.

The bottom line is, I want God’s best for you in a future husband, and that kind of guy is going to look a whole lot like that list of qualifications. But he probably won’t match it perfectly, especially when he’s in his teens and twenties. Here’s a rule of thumb for finding a godly guy, based on 1 Timothy 3:10: Before you decide whether a guy is worthy of your heart (someone who would be able to lead his bride in a godly way), examine him closely. If he passes the test, then let him pursue you.
