CHAPTER 14
REESE
After seeing Eddleman in that poorly state, Reese couldnât get it out of his head. And sitting in a car with Rooney wasnât making his mood any better.
âIâm telling you, man, you donât know what youâre missing,â said Rooney, biting into a jelly-filled donut. âThese are the best in the city.â
âSo, Iâve heard.â
âWhy are you in a bad mood? Youâre always in a bad mood.â Rooney bit into the donut and sent a drip of jelly down his chin.
âDonât you get tired of this? I swear, if something doesnât happen soon, Iâm going to die of boredom. I should be working a case, anything. This sucks. I donât see how you do it all day.â He shifted in his seat. âMy butt feels like itâs falling asleep. Iâm so sick of sitting here.â
âSorry. I know itâs not the best, most exciting job in the world, but I like it. And itâs not my fault that youâre here.â
âItâs not mine either. Itâs not like I asked to be shot. Itâs not like I did anything wrong. Yet, I feel like Iâm being punished.â
âSo? Tell the boss that. Otherwise, stop taking it out on me. All I hear is how boring it is, how you donât get enough action. I liked my job fine until you came along, and now even Iâm starting to second-guess it.â
âHow do you do it? Donât you want action?â
âI did. When I first got on the force, yes. But my wife and kids mean too much to me. Iâm okay with this boring job. It brings me home at night. And thereâs action now and then. Meanwhile, Iâm earning pay same as you.â
âI guess. I didnât know you were married.â
âYou never asked.â
Reese realized that he had only been thinking about himself. âSorry. How about you drive me back to the station, and I have that talk with the chief?â
âThat sounds better than sitting here listening to you complain.â Rooney started the car and drove up the street to turn around and head back to the station.
Reese had not tried to stand up for himself since Chiefâs insistence that he work with Rooney, but he knew if he was going to get in any of the action or learn anything more about Casey Youngâs murder, he had to fight for it.
As Rooney brought them closer to the station, he felt his nerves start to go on edge. He could hear the manâs voice already in his head, that gruff-sounding disapproval he knew he was about to face.
But he had to do something. He was in a fight for his own sanity.
When they got to the station, Rooney dropped him off at the door. âIâll be in the office doing paperwork from our stops. Let me know what he says.â
âThanks, Rooney. You know, I understand you a bit better. Youâre a good man.â
âThanks.â Rooney drove around through the sally port and to the back lot where they usually parked as Reese started to the door.
When he got to the buildingâs entrance, he could already see Chief Riles sipping coffee.
