“Who’s Steel?” Lucas asked me with a sense of righteous anger that should have been reserved for Zizi.

Untangling my fingers from his, I glowered at the Crown Prince. “He’s the Malice King,” I said, stating the truth.

And her betrothed, Zizi helpfully added.

Rylie gasped and Fiona rubbed her temples. “We’re going to be here a while, aren’t we?” the redhead asked.

“Betrothed?” Lucas scoffed. “You didn’t think to tell me that you were promised, much less to the Dark King of Malice?”

Laurel released an awkward laugh. Oh, look at the time. I’d better get my mid-day beauty nap in! With that she flashed and disappeared into my crown with a sudden Zap!

“Coward,” I grumbled.

Fiona took Rylie’s hand. “Come on, dear. I think we’re intruding on a lover’s quarrel.”

Rylie bobbed her head in agreement. As the pair sauntered off into the gardens I cupped my hand around my mouth and yelled, “Thanks for the backup! And by the way, we definitely aren’t lovers!”

Lucas scoffed, then glared at Zizi who was perched on a golden tree stump. What? she asked when we both stared at her.

“Zizi,” I said through clenched teeth.

She pushed out her lower lip. Okay, fine. But I want all the juicy details when you’re done! She jumped off of the stump and scampered after Fiona and Rylie. Hey, wait for me!

Watching her go, it felt odd to realize that Zizi wasn’t a projection inside my head anymore. While we were still connected through my Malice scar, she was actually physically here now and she wasn’t limited to my presence alone.

“Now can we talk?” Lucas asked, his voice taking on a kinder tone than before.

Frowning, I crossed my arms. “If you’re expecting an apology, then you can forget about it. I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“I never said you did anything wrong,” he countered. He sighed and motioned to a silver path that glittered with crystal butterflies. “Can we go for a walk?”

I felt like we’d been walking for a while already, but I was already so fuming mad that I stormed ahead of him down the path. Shadows puffed out around my feet and I knew I was losing control over my Malice, but I couldn’t bring myself to care.

Lucas followed me and matched my pace. If the smoky tendrils of Malice bothered him, he didn’t show it.

“I always knew that you had a special relationship with Malice,” he began when I’d finally slowed my gait. “I just didn’t realize it was so… complicated.”

Complicated was a good word.

Everything was always so complicated.

We walked in silence for a while and I felt my anger seeping out of me, leaving me feeling hollow.

We were deeper in the gardens now and I wondered how big this sanctuary really was. The faint patter of waterfalls echoed all around us as we reached a series of fountains and natural springs. Little golden fish jumped from the surface, making me feel like we’d walked into some sort of mystical paradise.

“I didn’t have a choice in the matter,” I said, pausing to rest at one of the soft mossy glades.
