My friends organized emergency dinner plans against my will that night. Annie demanded a meeting of our little team, and everyone agreed.

Audrey said nothing after knocking on our boss’s door, but they sat across from me with Gloria and Annie on either side. I braced for a lecture from the tribunal, but my social media team had other ideas.

“I ran an image search of the picture we planted. Not only is that the first thing that comes up now; the photo has landed on some social media blogs as we hoped, but it has several thousand shares across several platforms. Cross’s faceless grab where you bite your lip has the attention of the book world. I don’t need to tell librarians how huge that is. I found it on several photo montages already. Apparently, they are using it as ‘inspiration’ for their book boyfriends,” chirped Gloria excitedly. “Your account even received a DM request to purchase the rights to the photo from a romance author. She says you and Cross are the perfect inspiration for her advertising campaign.”

Gloria clapped her hands and squealed in excitement over the photo’s prospects.

Annie mimicked Gloria. “Fuck yes! If Chuck only knew how quickly we’re achieving success, he’d fucking flip. We’re getting so close! And speaking of close…” Annie wiggled her eyebrows suggestively in my direction. “How close was Cross to losing it in your boss’s office?”

Audrey coughed and looked annoyed. News traveled fast among this crowd.

“Yes. He certainly likes to live on the edge,” Audrey stated.

“My love,” started Gloria. “You are bringing everyone down. Just tell her what you found out.”

We all turned to Audrey, waiting for their big, emotional blow-up at me for being irresponsible and careless, but instead, Audrey grabbed my hand. The action startled me, and I fumbled with my soda.

“I was worried about Cross’s interest in you, so I emailed his friend. You know, Marcus that came by the library. Well, he said that Cross was a good man from what he knew, but he left to start some organization, and he wouldn’t clarify further. I didn’t like that one bit. I managed to get hold of an old postal worker colleague who had also served in the military. He put me in touch with a few contacts. Long story short, about ten years ago, Cross went silent. No one heard one word from him after he started a rather notorious life. I’m thinking he went to jail for whatever awful thing he was doing. I should have done all this research first before we put you in danger. I’m so sorry, Em.”

I knew where he had been for ten years. I wouldn’t tell my friends all of his secrets. Cross struggled to tell me about his past. How could I tell
