409. “Confucian” refers to the plurality of intellects who commit to the study and praxis of Confucius’ teaching. The term “Confucian thought” entails its school of thought. Whenever the words and ideas of the person of Confucius, rather than the school of thought, are intended in discussion, this book uses “Confucius.” “Confucian thought” (rujiasixiang儒家思想) is preferred in this book rather than “Confucianism” (rujiazhuyi儒家主义). The origin of “Confucianism” can be traced to the writings of the sixteenth century, when the Jesuits used “Confucius” as a Latin transliteration of Kong Fu Zi. An “-ism” was added to Confucius in the nineteenth century in order to be regarded as a distinctive philosophical entity different from Buddhism and Daoism. Yao, REC, 1.
