Chapter Twelve

As I stopped outside Noah’s door, my fingers curled into my palm. I hesitated for several seconds before raising my fist to knock.

My head was still muggy from a restless night full of nightmares, images of darkness closing over my eyes and clogging my mouth, and my stomach hadn’t stopped aching since I’d left the costume party last night. I didn’t really want to talk to or see anyone… But Noah was expecting a report, and at least he was the one person in this city I was totally sure was on my side.

Obviously my poor sleep showed on my face, because the second Noah answered my knock, his smile dropped behind a shadow of concern. “Are you all right? Did something happen last night?”

It had, and it hadn’t. To anyone on the outside, it’d look like nothing at all. I managed to offer him a tired smile in return. “I’m fine, just was too keyed up to get much sleep.”

The worry didn’t leave Noah’s expression, but he waved me in without pushing the subject. “I take it the party was eventful, then.”

“You could say that.” I let out an equally tired chuckle and drifted over to the chair I’d taken last time. As I sank into it, my throat closed up for a second. I rested my hands on the table, studying the bumps of my knuckles beneath the pale skin as if they’d tell me what to say.

It’s been so long.

My fingers started to clench again before I caught them and forced them to relax. I wasn’t going to bring up Shane Harrowfell with Noah. My former tutor had nothing to do with our mission, and everything he did have to do with was long over, thank God. But Noah could help me figure out what to make of the Haythorpes' suggestion and what I’d overheard between Ernest and the Achelings.

I’d start with that last bit. It was the easiest to talk about.

“I used an illusion to slip around a little without people realizing I was nearby,” I said as Noah took his seat across from me. “The Achelings and Ernest Mismeren were talking about taking pictures and something they hoped would impress the higher families into letting them in on some kind of scheme. I’m guessing that’s why they’re launching their whole plot—to get in good with the more powerful reaper families for some larger attack they’ve heard is being planned.”

Noah frowned. “That sounds ominous. Did you get any impression of what that larger attack might involve or the timeframe it’s happening in?”

I shook my head. “They only mentioned it briefly. I don’t even know what they were taking pictures of—it could be something to do with those two barony companies? But maybe if we get enough incriminating evidence on at least one of the Portland families, they’ll fill the blacksuits in to save their own hide from harsher sanctions.”

“If you can get that much evidence, great, but you know we’ll be happy with just finding out enough to stop whatever they’re plotting.
