After Sam had left to climb into his own vehicle, Grace sat behind the wheel of her Bucar, gripping the steering wheel while her mother’s words played in her head. “Bobby needs more than we can give him. He listens to you, Grace. If he lived with you, he wouldn’t do this kind of thing.”

Really? Did they honestly believe that living with her would somehow magically allow Bobby to control his addiction? That she could do her job and take care of Bobby at the same time? And if he died “on her watch”? What then? They’d blame her. If she refused to let him live with her and he died on a sleazy bathroom floor of the bar on the outskirts of town, they’d blame her. He’d lived with her once, and it had been a disaster. Of course, they didn’t know that, but still . . .

God, please tell me what to do.

With her eyes on the mirrors, she cranked the car and backed out of the parking spot. Thirty minutes later, she arrived at CIRG and pulled into her assigned slot. The tension headache eased and the muscles across the back of her shoulders and lower neck loosened. She hadn’t realized how tight she’d been holding her body until she didn’t have to anymore.

Once she was through security and at her desk, she opened her laptop and went to work on the profile. Two blessed uninterrupted hours later, she hit Send on the email and sat back.

There. It was done. Mark, Jerry, and everyone on the task force now had it in their inboxes with the full knowledge that she was working with what she had, and as soon as she learned something more, she’d update the document.

But for now, it was off her plate.

A knock on her door pulled her gaze from the computer screen to see Frank there. “The shooting was ruled good.” He stepped inside and placed her weapon on her desk. “You’re back to full speed ahead.” He paused. “Not that you ever weren’t full speed ahead.”

“That was faster than normal.”

“It was a no-brainer. I encouraged them not to dillydally. They didn’t.” His gaze held hers. “How are you doing? Be honest. Don’t gloss over what you’ve been through. The break-in at your house, the kidnapping, and the dunk in the marina . . . that’s all terrifying. It’s going to have a lasting effect on you.”

She was actually able to pull up a smile for him. “I know. I studied that stuff in med school, remember?”

He didn’t return the smile, and she sighed. “Okay, honest answer. As long as I stay busy, I do all right. I can push it to the corner of my mind, and while I know it’s there, it’s not consuming me. Last night was also okay because when I finally crashed, I didn’t dream. Surprisingly. Tonight might be a different story.” She shrugged. “I guess we’ll find out.”

He studied her for a moment, then shook his head. “Take time now if you need it.
