After Sam had left to climb into his own vehicle, Grace sat behind the wheel of her Bucar, gripping the steering wheel while her motherâs words played in her head. âBobby needs more than we can give him. He listens to you, Grace. If he lived with you, he wouldnât do this kind of thing.â
Really? Did they honestly believe that living with her would somehow magically allow Bobby to control his addiction? That she could do her job and take care of Bobby at the same time? And if he died âon her watchâ? What then? Theyâd blame her. If she refused to let him live with her and he died on a sleazy bathroom floor of the bar on the outskirts of town, theyâd blame her. Heâd lived with her once, and it had been a disaster. Of course, they didnât know that, but still . . .
God, please tell me what to do.
With her eyes on the mirrors, she cranked the car and backed out of the parking spot. Thirty minutes later, she arrived at CIRG and pulled into her assigned slot. The tension headache eased and the muscles across the back of her shoulders and lower neck loosened. She hadnât realized how tight sheâd been holding her body until she didnât have to anymore.
Once she was through security and at her desk, she opened her laptop and went to work on the profile. Two blessed uninterrupted hours later, she hit Send on the email and sat back.
There. It was done. Mark, Jerry, and everyone on the task force now had it in their inboxes with the full knowledge that she was working with what she had, and as soon as she learned something more, sheâd update the document.
But for now, it was off her plate.
A knock on her door pulled her gaze from the computer screen to see Frank there. âThe shooting was ruled good.â He stepped inside and placed her weapon on her desk. âYouâre back to full speed ahead.â He paused. âNot that you ever werenât full speed ahead.â
âThat was faster than normal.â
âIt was a no-brainer. I encouraged them not to dillydally. They didnât.â His gaze held hers. âHow are you doing? Be honest. Donât gloss over what youâve been through. The break-in at your house, the kidnapping, and the dunk in the marina . . . thatâs all terrifying. Itâs going to have a lasting effect on you.â
She was actually able to pull up a smile for him. âI know. I studied that stuff in med school, remember?â
He didnât return the smile, and she sighed. âOkay, honest answer. As long as I stay busy, I do all right. I can push it to the corner of my mind, and while I know itâs there, itâs not consuming me. Last night was also okay because when I finally crashed, I didnât dream. Surprisingly. Tonight might be a different story.â She shrugged. âI guess weâll find out.â
He studied her for a moment, then shook his head. âTake time now if you need it.
