Chapter Fifteen

“That Angelia has taken a real shine to you, Mike,” Sergeant McGraw said with a grin. “If I were you, I wouldn’t let her get away. She’s a keeper.”

“That is exactly why I don’t want to put her in danger again. She and her family already risked their lives for me. I don’t want them to do it again,” he said. “Okay, let’s hear your plan and get on with it.”

The sergeant laid it out to him. When she had finished, she said, “So the first thing we need to do is let Detective Mercer’s snitch know you’re here to get your truck. He’ll let out that you’re going to go see the place where your brother was killed. The snitch will see that word gets back to Johnny Garzillo, and we believe he’ll do it fairly soon. Then we’ll get you in position and wait. This really should work.”

Mike was more than a little nervous. Not all good plans go as hoped for. He prayed that this one would be successful. He wanted Garzillo in custody. The hours passed slowly as Mike waited. His truck was in the parking lot now. The key fob was back in his pocket. All he had to do was go out, get in the truck, and drive. No one would try to stop him, he hoped. If there was one thing Mike was not, it was a coward. He’d proven that to himself many times as a member of the Coast Guard. What he struggled with the most was waiting. He’d had more than his fill of that in the hospital as he waited to get well enough to be released. It had seemed like forever.

His phone rang. He flinched at the sound. Finally, he thought, it was time to go do his part to end the horror of Eli’s death. But it was not Sergeant McGraw calling.

“Hello, Hank,” he said when he saw on his phone’s screen who was calling.

“I’ve been on the phone with both the FBI and the detectives in Salem, Oregon. They have confirmed that the brothers of Kyle’s first wife are now living in Chicago. It was suspected before, but now we know it to be the case. I also spoke at length with the sheriff. They all know I plan to go to Chicago and see if I can help search for Martie, and at the same time possibly catch the killer of the two men who were murdered in my county,” Hank said.

“I plan to go that way too,” Mike told him. “I think that’s the most likely place the killer would have taken Martie, if she is still alive. We’ve got to try. But first I’m trying to help catch the third man who was part of the threesome that murdered my little brother.” At Hank’s urging, he told him how they were attempting to lure Johnny Garzillo out of hiding and arrest him.

“That makes me nervous, Mike. You’re not healed yet. Be really careful.
