Chapter Nineteen

Diego

As the water stops running, I pace, waiting for Inés to emerge. I called Yadira earlier, ensuring Inés would have everything she needs to feel comfortable here. I want her to know she's not alone. Not anymore. The sound of her bare feet against the marble breaks my train of thought. She steps out, clad in one of my T-shirts, her hair wrapped in a towel. She looks vulnerable, yet so undeniably strong.

Inés sucks in a deep breath and falls into my embrace. "I already feel better," she murmurs, her voice laced with tired relief.

I take the towel from her, tossing it aside, and gaze deeply into her eyes. "I know what I felt today is nothing compared to what you went through," I start, my voice low, tinged with an intensity that I can't hold back. "And I'm sorry that the protection I swore to provide faltered. I'm sorry you're ensnared in the dark web of my family's empire. But I assure you, with the full force of La Serpiente Dorada behind you, you are mine. And I protect what's mine fiercely, with my life."

Inés searches my eyes, a hint of confusion and a flicker of something else—maybe fear, maybe hope. "What does that mean, Diego? I am yours? Everything is happening so quickly. I've been on edge for so long these last years…they've been a whirlwind. But this thing between us, what is it really?"

I can't help but grin, even with the gravity of our conversation. "Inés, I've fallen for you, hard. It's you, only you, I want at my side. How I felt when you were taken," I pause, biting my lip, the fear and panic of those moments flooding back. "I never want to experience that again. I love you, Inés. It's fast, it's hard, but it's undeniable."

Her eyes widen slightly, questions whirling. "Love? How? We hardly know each other, Diego. I've told you, I'm…I'm broken," she stammers, trying to retreat, but I hold her close.

"I know what I need to know, and that's how I feel. Your past is now my past. As someone who's been through his own hell, I understand the work needed to face each day. And sometimes, even that's too monumental a task," I say, my voice firm but gentle. "I'm not here to fix you, Inés. That's not my place. But I am here to love you, to support you. Everything I said earlier? I meant every word. I'm here for you, in body and soul. You're mine, and I'm yours. We'll navigate this life together, one step at a time."

A single tear escapes her eye, and I catch it, tasting its bitter truth. We hold each other close, the room silent except for our synchronized breathing. At that moment, no words are needed; our souls intertwine, speaking a language only hearts in tune can understand.

I gently tilt her chin up, capturing her lips with mine. It's a tender and sweet kiss, a soft exploration that soon deepens, growing ardently, recklessly with a burning desire.
