When I woke up the next morning, I was alone.

For a few long, languid moments, I thought I was back in my quarters. I rolled over in bed, wondering why the other side of my mattress was still faintly warm. What was the last thing I did last night? I’d had the meeting with the rest of the crew, and then...

A big dumb grin spread across my face. Oh yeah. Then Ruby and I had some fun.

There was a pleasant ache in my limbs as I got washed up and dressed. I wasn’t sure where Ruby had gotten herself off to, but I wasn’t too worried about it - as long as she stayed on Alpha Spire, there wasn’t much trouble she could get into. Unless Shay discovered the two of us spent the night together and got pissed off...

I glanced up at the ceiling. Was that what had happened? A spike of worry shot through me. “Chirrup, where is Ruby right now?”

“Ruby is currently in the Alpha Spire’s galley!” the electronic voice cheerfully informed me. “She was joined a short while ago by Shay and Meiko!”

My fingers stilled at my zipper for a moment. “All three of them together?” I said calmly.

“Yes!”

Great, I thought, putting the finishing touches on my shipsuit. Hope I’m not walking into anything awkward...

A sudden rumble in my stomach reminded me that it didn’t really matter - I was hungry, so I was going. My android body didn’t need to eat nearly as much as the old human Noah, but I hadn’t chowed down on anything since I’d been awakened in my new body. I was long overdue.

Especially after working up an appetite with Ruby last night, I thought, whistling to myself as I made my way through the corridors of Alpha. I might need a second helping if she’s up for it...

As I got closer to the galley, I moaned with delight. Something smelled amazing.

The smell grew even stronger as I entered the galley. Ruby had her back to me as I walked in, her fingers doing a complicated dance with the controls of the food replicator. Shay and Meiko sat next to each other at the table, half-empty plates and mugs of coffee in front of them. From the looks on their faces and the way Ruby held herself, I could tell they’d been discussing something heatedly and had stopped right as I entered the room.

“Good morning!” I said, brushing off the awkwardness. “What smells so delicious? I’m drooling over here...”

As I sat down, Ruby came over with a plate balanced in her hand. There was a thick stack of waffles there, along with a small stick of butter and a carafe of syrup. My stomach grumbled loud enough for the entire room to hear as Ruby set them down in front of me.

“Oh man,” I groaned. “These look incredible, Ruby.”
