Chapter 29

The tactical situation on the ground in Alturas was tenuous. Marsden’s team had survived the jump with no casualties other than one operator who twisted an ankle landing on an old tree stump, so they quickly moved on foot to meet the other group who had suffered far more serious consequences from their jump from the doomed Osprey.

As they were walking toward the other team, they heard the distinctive sounds of several jets taking off and then a horrendous explosion ripping through the forest about half a mile from their position.

When they arrived at the second team’s location a few minutes later, they found Tex walking through his group checking for injuries. Marsden joined him as they walked over to the medic who was working on the communications specialist Miller. He covered his face and turned to Tex. “He’s gone. Looks like he broke his neck on the way out the door,” he said with a resigned shrug.

“OK, Doc, What about the others?” Tex asked.

“I’m surprised they came out as well as they did. Marcum has a fractured arm, Poole, looks like a couple of broken ribs and the rest just a few scrapes and bruises.”

Marsden keyed his communicator and spoke to the Osprey now circling overhead at twenty-four thousand feet, safely out of range of the SA-18 missiles, “Guys, I need some eyes on target. What are you seeing from there?”

Capt. Phillips responded back to him, “Looks like three Migs took off and a fourth crashed off the end of the runway. That might be your best entrance into the airbase, there’s a hole eighty feet wide blown through the fence that surrounds the facility. And guys, you need to hurry, all the other Migs on the ground have pilots crawling into the cockpits, it looks like eight more getting ready to takeoff in the next few minutes. I already have a call into Edwards AFB and they’re scrambling some F16s to intercept the Migs already in the air.”

“Roger that Cap. Our teams are headed to the airfield,” Marsden said. “Leave the wounded here with both medics, everyone else, drop all your gear except weapons and let’s go!” he barked. He slung his weapon, glanced around to make sure everyone else was ready and started toward the airbase.

The teams were sprinting at a dead run through the forest to reach the end of the runway. It was absolutely hellish trying to run through the heavily wooded terrain while ducking under deadfalls and being torn and scratched by the dense underbrush while carrying their equipment and weapons.

They finally reached the Mig crash site where the forest looked like a firestorm had gone through it. They skirted around the area where the fire was still raging from the burning fuel on board the aircraft. Tex signaled to his teams as they eased slowly up to the edge of the airfield. As they tried to remain hidden by the cover of the forest, they were able to see the gunners at the two end positions on the runway manning what appeared to be .
