The couple were publicly identified as a physicist and brilliant scholar, Dr. Gilbert Bogle, who worked for the Australian Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization. He was married with children, but during the investigation into his death and at the inquest, it became apparent from witness statements that he was a frequent philanderer who often took his female partners to parks in the area. The woman who had been found dead close-by was Mrs. Margaret Chandler, also married with a child. The suggestion was that they had gone to the river area for a sexual encounter. Both of them had been at a party the night before they were found. The doctor’s wife had stayed at home to look after their new baby, but Mrs. Chandler’s husband had accompanied his wife to the party. It appears that they had already met the physicist once before at another party, and when her husband was interviewed after his wife’s body was found, he admitted that they had an ‘open relationship,’ and that at the first party, his wife had expressed to him that she found the physicist attractive. Her husband had told her that if she wanted to, she could have a relationship with the doctor.
