As soon as Casey walked into the apartment, his mom looked up from her textbook and said, “Yes, I talked to the guy with the parrot.”

“Hey, you answered before I even asked.”

His mom ruffled his hair. “What can I say? I’m psychic.” She took the pitcher of fruit punch from the fridge and poured Casey a glass. “Mr. Byron is his name—the man, not the parrot. He seems like a nice older guy, and he invited us to come to his house to meet the bird. I’m squeamish about going to strangers’ houses, so I asked if we could meet somewhere public. We’re meeting in the public library parking lot at six o’clock. He used to work in the library, he said.”

Now Casey felt like his heart was not just inflating like a balloon but floating like one. “And he’s bringing the bird?”

His mom smiled. “He is. It likes car rides, apparently.”
