There’s more than just your time involved in creative work; you also have to consider overhead and costs. While calculating your hourly rate with all of your expenses included covers most of it, it isn’t necessarily enough for some larger tasks. From meals purchased during all-day work sessions to user research gifts, there are a lot of “little things” that can add up over time. Any equipment or software you purchase specifically for a project should be charged to the client at a markup. Your time and expertise to acquire the tools to perform the job should not be free.

If you’re in countries that require VAT, keep in mind that when providing B2B services you’ll likely owe VAT. There are even certain creative services in the U.S. that should have sales taxes charged and collected. Unless you’re handing over a physical deliverable, such as a print, it shouldn’t be an issue. But you’ll still need to check with your accountant. It’s best to find out now so that you’re not caught off-guard at year-end.
