EIGHTEEN

Zsamei was involved in his mission. Dorian didn’t like it but there wasn’t much he could do other than outright asking her to refuse. He couldn’t do that. The instant Rook explained the danger, she’d jumped at the chance to help. Now he had to worry about Kumar being in close proximity to a woman he wanted for more than sex sharing.

They’d gone over the details and how The Dark Twisted would be utilized. Zsamei gave them access to her files and Hahn transferred copies of the data on Kumar. To their amusement, he hadn’t even lied on his profile, listing himself as a soldier.

Per the plan, Seraphina activated one of her secret personas with a reputation for an interest in extreme sex sharing and other proclivities. They hoped Kumar would pick up on the lure and respond but if not Ghost Unit was on its way to the Jutak Commander’s residence to confer about security measures.

The hover car hit a bump in the roadway and Rook adjusted the steering and increased their speed. Shortly they’d arrive at Torkel Alonson’s home and go over the tasks Kyele had given them. Update security system and alarms as well as add an automated defense system to the exterior.

From his seat in the front passenger side, Dorian eyed his teammates in the back. Hahn for once was quiet but it was Kjar who concerned him the most. The other man stared out the window on his side with a flat expression. He couldn’t place what was going on with him but the Volvian had been acting strange of late.

When off mission, Kjar used to let his hair hang free. Pulling it back or pinning it up held taboo connotations for his race but none of them delved too deeply into the why, deciding he’d share if he wanted.

Then something changed. Aside from Rook’s water exercise, Kjar rarely left his hair unbound any more. He constantly kept it braided and tied down with additional ropes to contain the lively strands. From the glimpse he’d gotten that day at the underground pool, Dorian had noted the increased length. The white mass now fell below his waist.

Volvians couldn’t cut their hair without excruciating pain. It was part of them as much as their skin, eyes or nose, filled with nerves and a sentience they didn’t explain to outsiders.

The sudden change in his demeanor didn’t encourage questions. Dorian tended to be the quiet one of their group and Hahn the prankster. Kjar’s quick wit and clever tongue had gone a long way in easing the strain amongst them when they’d first joined Ghost Unit. This new sharp edge to him was unusual and he’d become increasingly combative.

Three clicks went off in Dorian’s ear comm. He shifted his gaze from Kjar to Rook. His Team Leader tapped a message on the screen on the dash and he leaned over to read.

‘Problem?’

Dorian shook his head. Rook arched a brow in his direction and he shook his head again. He wasn’t one to panic.
