CHAPTER 10

Mel

After a very late night, Judd and I sleep in. I’m the first one up, so I get dressed and pad out to the living to order a brunch delivery. A little while later, the doorbell rings. Thinking it’s the food, I open the door and stand face to face with Damien and Lexi. Shit.

“You’re home early,” I say as I feel the heat creeping up my face. “I just stopped by to check on the dogs.” And apparently lost my shoes. I hear footsteps behind me.

“Who’s at the - oh, hey, guys? Welcome home,” Judd says.

Dave and Maggie come running when they hear Damien’s voice. After Lexi tells me we’ll talk soon, they head home.

“Well, I think they know now,” I say.

“I’m surprised they didn’t say anything,” Judd says.

“If I know Lexi, poor Damien’s getting an earful now.”

The doorbell rings again. Brunch. “This is why I answered the door. I wanted to surprise you.”

“Everything looks delicious, especially you.”

I throw my arm across my forehead and say, “My, my, Judd, you’re such a sweet talker.”

“You’re so damn cute.”

We spend the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company. Judd takes me home after dinner. I need to be on top of my game at work now that Daniel’s monitoring me. I’m sitting in my office after lunch when my cell rings. Damien.

“Hello,” I say.

“Hey, I’m here with Cassie. Let me put you on speaker. I wanted to talk to you both about a surprise party for Lexi’s birthday.”

“I’m excited already,” I say.

“What did you have in mind?” Cassie asks.

“I wanna do it here. The first part could be before the club opens with just our friends and the staff, then continue when we open with a special karaoke night,” Damien says.

“I have a great idea to get her there,” I say. “I’ll need your help, Cassie.”

“Sure, what are ya thinking?” Cassie asks.

“I’ll invite her for lunch, telling her that since Damien gets to celebrate her at night, I get lunch. Then you can call her and tell her there’s a problem at the club.”

“That’s perfect,” Damien says. “Cassie and Mel, can you work out the details and just let me know? That way I don’t get caught. I really want to surprise her.”

I hear muffled yelling. “Scott just let me know Lexi’s here.”

“Mel, I’ll call you later,” Cassie says and we disconnect.

I spend the rest of the afternoon finishing up my financial reports and getting them loaded into Tableau to present at the next executive meeting. Jay drops by a little before five and we head out together. I’m relieved I didn’t have to see Daniel today.

When I get home, I change into jammies and grab myself a bowl of Lucky Charms for dinner. I may be a college-educated executive, but damn, I still love my kid cereals. I’m crunching on the last spoonful of marshmallows when my phone rings and Judd’s sexy chest fills my screen. Yep, snuck a picture of him when he was sleeping and I’m not sorry!

“Hey, sexy,” I say in my best sultry voice.
