16 – Play with Your Kids (or borrow 1 or 2)

It seems that the playful, imaginative world of our childhood is so very far away. And in times of stress, this distance feels even further. But our kids have a way of showing us how to live in the moment and participate in an imaginative world that comes alive right before their eyes.

I wrote about this extensively in my book, Stimulated! Habits to Spark Your Creative Genius at Work 10 years ago where my co-author, Andrew Pek and I shared 5 habits that sparked creativity. One of these five habits is playing. The sense of getting lost in what you are doing, experimenting, tinkering and just being playful is not an easy concept to embrace in the work world. But it is exactly this habit that helps us see things differently and come up with ideas we never would have thought of without it. This sense of playfulness is contagious if you can get out of your adult mind that is always more critical and cautious and move into your child’s world – one of wonder and awe. Even just observing your kids playing is a great way to step out of the “adulting” world. But don’t stop at just observation – jump in there right alongside your kids, roll up your sleeves and don’t worry if you get dirty or the house gets messy, just have fun. If your kids are older and living less often in the imaginary world, play a board game. Laugh together, read jokes to one another. Just have some fun. These are shared memories that last forever. Think about your own precious moments of childhood – what makes those stand out for you? What made it special? Do this for your kids but also do it for yourself!

And if you don’t have your own kiddos, borrow some! (Their parents will thank you!) Even for just a short time – and if you can’t get together physically still, thank goodness for Zoom and Skype, and other ways of having a virtual playdate! The feel-good hormones created in just an hour or so of play will keep you feeling great long after you are done!

So, just for today, take a moment to get into the world of your child, be playful and forget your adult responsibilities for just a little bit!
