Chapter Twenty-Eight

“You asked me to bring him there,” Emanuel Amendolia said.

He was seated in a plush leather desk chair facing the enormous walnut desk by the floor to ceiling windows. Theodore Yang sat in a similar chair on the opposite side of the desk, staring out the window toward the setting sun.

“I had thought showing him the complex would pique his curiosity enough to want to stay on and head up the kitchen for the duration,” Yang said. “Even Monica Fellini was an unexpected addition to our enticements, but she seems unable to tie him down. She seems too interested in Peter Haver.”

“I noticed that today,” Amendolia said. “Perhaps we should have a little talk with our two directors.”

Yang looked at him for a moment then nodded his head. “It would give us some insight, I'm sure. Meanwhile we need to keep Hart's interests focused.”

Amendolia cocked his head. “Why does it have to be Hart? There are other high-profile chefs we can pull from Vegas, surely.”

“Our Mr. Hart has friends in high places,” Yang said. “That's one of the reasons I wanted him here, in a limited capacity of course.”

“He's a cook. His high-placed friends are probably just patrons of his Baltimore restaurant, that's all,” Emanual said.

“On the contrary, my friend, Mr. Hart was, in fact, formerly married to the sister of the Assistant Director of the CIA.”

“Hmmm,” Amendolia mumbled. He wasn't impressed. “That's still arm's length connection,” he said. “And if you were worried about his connections, why did you hire him?”

“Sun Tzu said: 'Keep friends close but enemies closer’ “Yang said, grinning.

“You consider him an enemy?”

“I consider Frank Daro an enemy,” Yang said.

“And who is that?”

“Hart's brother-in-law, the former Assistant Director of the CIA. He moved to Homeland Security to form some kind of clandestine security agency last year,” Yang said. “And he's still friends with his ex-brother-in-law, Mr. Artichoke Hart.”

“You think this Daro guy sent Hart?” Amendolia asked.

“Hart isn't on Homeland's payroll as far as I can tell but his restaurant is only an hour or so from Langley and, according to my sources, he shows up there quite a lot it seems.”

“But you said Daro moved on.”

“That's the official line, sure,” Yang said. “But no one knows what his little operation actually does. What we do know is last year, when he was present for a Presidential assassination attempt in Northern New York, our Mr. Hart just happened to be the interim chef at that facility.”

Amendolia didn't say anything, but he turned to gaze out of the window. Yang was watching him closely.

“So, you think he's connected to this Daro guy?” he said finally.

Yang stood and came around to the front of the desk, leaning his backside against it. He folded his arms.

“I think I need to know what Hart tells Daro,” Yang said. “And I think your girl Julia can help me with that.”

Amendolia’s head shot sideways, and he stared at Yang, his face reddening.

“What's she got to do with this?” he said, his voice loud and demanding.
