NINE

“Get down as low as you can!” Victoria said and ducked as another round of shots whizzed past them. Still holding hands, they were almost to the trees when more gunfire erupted.

She pushed Aaron into the woods and fired back toward the barrel flashes. “Keep going. I’ll be right behind you.”

A stray bullet struck the Glock, and the vibration from the shot forced the gun from her hand. She’d lost her only means of protecting herself.

Victoria dropped to her knees. With her hands spread out in front of her, she frantically searched the snowy ground for the Glock.

She could hear them advancing on her location. Her hand connected with the gun. Not much time. The men were almost on top of her now.

She jerked the weapon toward the men, but before she fired a single round, a shot from behind her flew past her head. Aaron had her back.

Victoria opened fire, as well. The men dove for cover.

“Go, go, go.” She stumbled to her feet. Aaron grabbed her arm and together they ran.

“They know we’re here now. Whatever you do, don’t stop. Even if I can’t make it, keep going.”

He’d never let her go. “That’s not happening.”

It was pointless to argue. She’d deal with the situation if it arose. Aaron was an honorable man who would give his life for hers.

“We can’t outrun them. Find someplace to get out of sight.” Victoria searched around in the darkness. “There.” A tree appeared to have been struck by lightning and had snapped into two pieces.

Slipping behind the damaged tree, she and Aaron crouched low while she prayed for God’s protection to keep them hidden from the enemy.

“They can’t have gone far. I’m pretty sure I hit her,” a familiar voice said. Not Logan, but one of the men from the woods earlier.

Victoria instinctively moved closer to Aaron in a protective gesture. She’d fight to the death to keep him safe.

“They’re not here. Let’s keep moving. He’s determined they don’t walk out of here alive.” Those chilling words settled around Victoria. Who was this man they spoke of?

After a moment, their footsteps faded. Aaron peeked from behind the tree. “I don’t see them.” He stood and held out his hand for her. “There could be others coming after them. We should change directions.”

“That’s smart. Which way?” she asked while trying to get her bearings. They were somewhere behind Hunter’s home, but in the dark, it was hard to tell exactly where they were.

He glanced around before pointing to the left of the downed tree. “This way. It will take us longer to reach your cabin, but at least we’ll be hidden by the woods and not out in the open.”

Snow continued to fall harder as they walked. All she could think about was the possibility that these men were watching Robert, as well. Somehow, she had to find a way to warn him that he could be in danger.

Soon, the trees thinned. A clearing separated the woods from a house. They stopped for a breath and to listen.
