‘Are you really sure we can trust her?’ Kate asked, once they were a fair distance from the location, partly because she didn’t trust Helen to have the outside of the building bugged, but also because she didn’t want to accuse someone Marlowe almost thought of as family, as being someone who could betray them.

Marlowe thought about the question for a long minute as they walked along the Parisian road.

‘No,’ he eventually replied. ‘But in the grand scheme of things, we don’t really have many people we can trust right now.’

Kate gave a little smile.

‘Thanks,’ she said.

‘For what?’

‘For being honest with me,’ Kate shrugged, looking out across the street. ‘You could easily have just said it was fine, she could be trusted, and come back later, with me none the wiser, but you didn’t.’

‘Some people would rather that,’ Marlowe suggested.

‘And I’m sure they like spending their lives in ignorance,’ Kate retorted. ‘Anyway, come on. If we can’t do anything until midnight, we’ve got a day to spend in France, it seems.’

‘True,’ Marlowe stopped. ‘You know, it’s weird. I’ve been running forwards for so long now, I don’t know what it’s like to stop and wait.’

He stared up at the surrounding buildings.

‘So what do you want to do? Do you want to go see a film or something? Catch a train to Disneyland Paris or Asterix World?’

‘Actually,’ Kate beamed at the thought, ‘I’ve never been to the Moulin Rouge.’

‘Well then, let’s get that sorted!’ Marlowe exclaimed. ‘Let’s have a day out as tourists, go to an early show of the Moulin Rouge, and then grab our new identities – before we return to England and our possible arrest for treason against the Crown.’

‘You make it sound so romantic,’ Kate laughed, linking her arm into his. ‘Can we stop for some lunch first, though? I’m starving.’
