For those who can commit and respond to this treatment, the results are excellent. The remission time and relative safety of the Goeckerman regimen are the main reasons why it has remained popular for treating moderate to severe psoriasis. It is particularly useful for children with psoriasis, who may not be able to undergo other treatments due to their risks and side effects. Even after several years, many patients do not require a repeat course of psoriasis day-care therapy and are able to control their disease with home maintenance treatments, including the use of UV-B home units.

In my experience, at the end of treatment, using the Goeckerman regimen, the doctors and nurses saw something infinitely valuable: people who, after years of living with an unsightly and miserable disease, were free of that disease at last. Patients would express complex emotions: joy at being clear, fear of the unknown, worry about recurrences, and confidence about having the most advanced self-help techniques available. These people would now be able to lead more normal lives, which some of them had not experienced for many years.

When I reported our excellent results from the Goeckerman regimen performed in day-care centers to other dermatologists, few could believe our statistics. Our holistic approach had really made a difference. We had addressed both physical symptoms and psychological issues and together these had promoted greater healing. Furthermore, few of these patients needed to return for a repeat Goeckerman. The nurses had taught them well, and they no longer needed us to help them through outbreaks.
