As they rolled away from the cheering crowd outside of Fox & Forrest in a decorated car, the silence between them was deafening.

And it stretched.

And stretched.

The warm and tender looks they’d shared in front of everyone else vanished with the click of the door lock.

Wow. He was a good actor.

Get out of your fucking head, Lily. He was acting, you were acting, none of this is real except the legally binding union.

“So you’re okay taking a road trip tomorrow?” He pulled into his garage.

It occurred to her that she now semi-permanently lived at the mansion they were pulling into.

“Holy fuck, this is my house. Well, I mean, your house,” she said, correcting. “I mean this isn’t…you know.”

“Lily, this is our house. It would be best for you to call it that from now on. Stay there.”

“Don’t tell me what to do,” she replied with little heat, but she was tired and in pain. Nash opened her door and pulled her up to standing.

She winced. She’d done pretty well walking on her hurt knee, but it was all catching up to her now that the adrenaline had worn off. “You don’t have to…you know,” she said through clenched teeth.

“Lily,” he said sternly. “I am tired. I lied to a lot of people today. My brother is still eagerly awaiting my demise. My mother is barely speaking to me, and—” He cut himself off, swallowing his words. He clenched his jaw. “And it’s been a long day, so please. Let me do this one thing.”

She relented, throwing her arms around his neck at seeing the tension on his face.

He picked her up so she avoided the steps up to the door and kept walking into the kitchen.

He felt warm and solid under her arms. She tried to memorize the feeling of his suit against her skin, knowing she might not feel it again.

He still hadn’t put her down as they stood in the dim kitchen.

Hot and cold, cold and hot.

And when she was in his arms, very fucking hot.

Would her sanity last after another few months of this?

“I think you can put me down now,” she said quietly, unable to take her eyes off of his lips a few inches from her face.

He licked his lips. “I thought it was…” He cleared his throat. “I wanted to savor the tradition, carrying the bride over the threshold. But you’re right. I’ll carry you up.”

My heart. She hadn’t even considered that he’d carried her over the threshold. That he’d care about that.

He walked up the staircase leading to their bedroom.

The tension felt thick between them. Make a joke. Say anything. “I guess it’s fitting for a husband to carry his bride to the most important room of the night.” Oh fuck, why did I say that? His eyes flew to hers as he stumbled on the top step.

“Not that I mean we have to—” she said, suddenly.

“No, no, no. It’s not—I wasn’t expecting. That we wouldn’t,” Nash said quickly, as he set her down and backed away, rubbing his eyes in frustration.
