CHAPTER EIGHT

DAMEN’S BREATH SEARED IN, leaving his lungs overfull yet somehow without enough air to sustain him.

This was what he wanted. What he’d planned to get for so long. Yet, as he looked into Stephanie’s serious face with that tiny frown on her brow and lips parted as if she too couldn’t get enough oxygen, it wasn’t triumph he felt. Or not entirely.

The hammer beat in his blood revealed the depth of his need. He wasn’t besting her. This wasn’t a contest. He felt almost scared to touch her, as if she’d melt away or change her mind and he’d be left alone, the craving for her eating him up.

Damen didn’t let himself hesitate. He stepped in to stand toe to toe with her. Her nipples grazed him and a spiral of hot metal coiled down from his chest to his groin, screwing his body tighter and hotter.

He palmed her bare back. Her flesh was velvety. His other hand ploughed through her curls, tilting her head. She looked up at him with wide, wary eyes. It was too dark to see their golden depths but even in the gloom he felt her scrutiny. As if she didn’t trust him to make this worth her while. As if expecting him to let her down.

That spurred him to take his time, though he wanted to plunder her lips till she stopped thinking and gave him everything.

He pressed his lips to the corner of her mouth, teasing them both, telling himself he could withstand a few more moments’ waiting. She trembled and something hard inside softened.

Damen gentled his hand on her scalp, slid his mouth along her cheek, peppering tiny kisses along flesh that tasted like vanilla and something far more precious. To the edge of her jawline, to her ear. Slender fingers grabbed his upper arms. He felt rather than heard her sigh.

That was when his patience disintegrated, even as he told himself to go slow. Now he was back at her mouth, tugging her bottom lip between his teeth, hearing her gasp, feeling her fingers dig into his flesh through his jacket. Damen licked that delicate lower lip, savouring a taste of paradise.

He was telling himself to move on, press more teasing kisses along her jawline, when Stephanie slicked her tongue along the seam of his mouth. A second later she fastened her teeth on his bottom lip and nipped hard.

Sensations, raw and hot, shot through him. All thought of slow seduction faded as he gathered her in, hauling her against a body forged hard as steel.

No coaxing now, just a driving hunger that melded their lips, their tongues tangling in a wild dance of eager ecstasy.

Stephanie quivered against him, but not with nerves. Not with her hands clutching so tight it was as if she wanted to climb up him, all the better to devour him. And even though he, from his superior height, bowed her back over his arm, this wasn’t about dominance and submission.

Submission! She was anything but submissive.
