Chapter Fourteen

Steve

I want you to stay over.

The way he looked up at me, so open and so adorable, it was all I could do not to scoop him up and carry him to bed right then and there. Get him ready and tuck him in. Ash had such a little quality. And it wasn’t just him being on my lap; it was the lack of makeup except the eyeliner, the choice of movie, the way he blinked up at me. It was the complete package.

We reached his room, and he padded off to the bathroom to get ready and apologized for only having one. When he came out, he was wearing no more than a pair of boxers. Not just any boxers, either. They were lace. Lace boxers. “Is it okay if I sleep in these?”

I looked up at him. “Uh-huh.” They had officially stolen my ability to speak in words.

“I have more, if you want to wear them.” At first, I thought maybe he was teasing, but the way he bit his lip while he waited for me to ask told a different story. This question was more than the surface.

“I didn’t even know they made them.” I crossed over to him. “Are they scratchy? May I touch them?”

“Not scratchy. I mean, I’m sure some brands are but not these. They’re from an up-and-coming designer named Beaumont. I sent him a PR box from one of my collections because he put on social media how excited he was for it and, about a year later, I got a surprise package featuring his new line.”

I reached over and rubbed a finger down the side. “It’s like silk.”

“Is that a yes?”

“I think so.” My ass was going to be so spoiled in that softness.

He walked into his closet and came out with a white box. “I think this is your size. He sent me a few.”

I opened it to find a light teal in my exact size. “It’s perfect. Is the designer community like that? Always helping each other?”

He started to giggle and shook his head. “Not at all. It can be cutthroat. But I try to make it better, to build a community of those of us who look out for each other and lift each other up.”

I was sure there was more to that story, but it would have to wait.

“Let me get ready for bed.” I ruffled his hair because it felt like the thing to do. “Be back in a few.”

I brushed my teeth with the new brush he set out for me, along with some towels and a sample-size body wash. His thoughtfulness wasn’t surprising, but it warmed my heart all the same.

Not for the first time, I wondered if he was going to be able to let go of his own caretaker tendencies enough to slip into the headspace having a daddy could give him. His caretaker side was flung upon him, something he felt he needed to take on due to the circumstances around him.
