High Level of Automation and Informationization of Tobacco Logistics

Tobacco logistics has a greater need for resources, such as logistics information technology, software technology, industrial facilities, and advanced equipment. At present, logistics facilities and technologies such as Automatic Storage & Retrieval System, Automatic Sorting Conveyor System, and information management system of integrative logistics in storages and distributions have been universally applied in the industrial system; these components have greatly improved the level of logistics and production efficiency of the tobacco industry Some cigarette enterprises carry out pallet operations within the province or among several provinces and cities. Combining information visualization technologies such as RFID electronic tags, GPS, GIS, and Internet of Things technologies, these cigarette enterprises build tobacco logistics systems featuring precise operations, visualized monitoring, and intelligent processing.

For example, in terms of distribution and transportation, Beijing Tobacco Logistics Center implements the integrated management of logistics operations, such as sorting and delivery of cigarettes, distribution monitoring, and delivery confirmation through the application of Internet of Things technology. Specifically, integrated management is mainly reflected in the following aspects: (1) Optimizing business processes such as ordering, delivery, and settlement with customer satisfaction as the goal, and enhancing logistics sorting and distribution operations in a timely response to market demands; (2) Using GIS, GPS, and in-transit information systems in the cigarette distribution link to achieve real-time optimization and intelligent monitoring of distribution routes; (3) Tracing trunk transportation and goods transfer at intermediate transfer points through electronic locks; (4) Adopting intelligent handheld terminal to realize electronic confirmation of shipment arrivals.

As for warehousing and sorting, the Hunan Branch Company of China Tobacco organized the project, titled “Research and Application of Cigarette Logistics Storage and Sorting Equipment Management System” in 2014. After more than three years of endeavor, the project has independently developed a panoramic, three-dimensional, real-time logistics equipment status monitoring system using Internet of Things, big data, and other practical technologies. The system sets up nearly 15,000 equipment status data collection points in five major areas, such as inbound, outbound, stocking, replenishment, and sorting, to monitor the equipment operations status in a real-time manner and automatically collect equipment operations data. The system yields a comprehensive perception of equipment status and full-process management through active extraction of data, automatic screening, targeted analysis, and real-time feedback. Since the implementation of the project, the cigarette sorting efficiency of the project undertaker has increased by an average of 14%, and substantial economic benefits have been achieved.
