A Part for the Whole

An honest assessment of these divisions within ourselves, our families, our communities and nations, points to the fundamental error of mistaking a part of something for the whole. As we have already seen, what Christian tradition has come to call original sin is in fact the original illusion of separation. It is the illusion on which the false self is based, the distortion that blinds each of us to our inheritance as an “image of God.” In its place, we erect an idol of our own making. Once the idol of the separate self is securely on its pedestal, we are capable of perpetrating untold evils on the newly perceived “other.” In the aftermath of the expulsion from Eden, Genesis narrates the swiftness and ferocity with which this illusion of separation unravels into competition, jealousy, and rage. Through sin, death enters the world. And not only death, but murder.
