Chapter 20

Unlike Kerry and Simon, Wayne wasn’t willing to quickly link the two deaths. Kerry pushed aside Wayne’s comment and became focused on the second murder victim found at the base of the crevice. Even as Wayne had tried to suggest that it was a coincidence, she knew better.

Shane was leaning against a pile of rocks, clutching his stomach and trying not to be sick. His face was flush hot with nausea, even against the chill in the wind. An avid climber and outdoorsman, Shane was having difficulty standing straight without wobbling from side-to-side. Eventually, he descended the rocky island, strode across the rotted dock, and tumbled into his boat. A thin line of waves trailed his exit, leaving a small wake as he made his way home.

Kerry turned her attention back to Simon, who was finishing his call to the rescue team, instructing them to return with the same retrieval basket they used for Hope Ryan.

Kerry sealed Hope’s phone in a clear evidence bag and tucked it into her pocket. Power had completely drained from the battery and Kerry would have to wait until she returned to the station and plugged the phone into a charging cable to see if it still worked. Until then, she’d wait until the rescue team arrived and lifted the second body from the depths of the crevice.

Simon walked up behind Kerry, stood beside her, and looked down into the deep dark hole where their two most recent victims had fallen to their deaths.

Kerry turned her face toward him, “What do you think the chances are that this is a coincidence? You know, finding a second body in the same location that Hope Ryan died?”

“Same as you. Zero.”

“I just look forward to this phone giving us some information about who pushed Hope off this ledge. Because I have a feeling the same person is also responsible for the second victim being there.”

Shane couldn’t tell them if it was a man or a woman laying on a ledge in the depths of the crevice. As soon as he saw the shoes hanging off another ledge, he scrambled up the side of the rock. His only interest was to get as far away from the second body. The rescue team got to work as soon as the helicopter landed. They secured the basket and lowered it down and lifted the second body out of the crevice. When the body was resting on the ground next to Kerry, she unzipped the body bag. The woman was badly decomposed, but Kerry guessed she was probably in her thirties. She had most definitely been down in the crevice before Hope’s fall, and Kerry suspected that the two women found their way down into the dark gully for the same reason. Kerry patted her gloved hand over the
