More Than 9 to 5 Availability

On any given Saturday night, each member of our team is likely to get paged at least once. Often, that results in team members consulting with each other. Such availability can be a crucial lifeline to you; you shouldn’t be told to wait until Monday or to go to the emergency room. Postpartum depression doesn’t lend itself to that kind of “working hours” treatment.

Lucy paged her psychologist, sobbing. “I feel terrible,” she said. “I stopped taking my medications three days ago. I’m only 24 years old, and I don’t want to be taking pills.”

Lucy’s psychologist was concerned about her, and she also knew that medication issues need to be handled by the psychiatric team member. She asked Lucy if she would page the psychiatrist, and Lucy continued to cry. The psychologist phoned the psychiatrist to get medical advice, and communicated the information to Lucy, as well as helping Lucy realize that in order for the team to help her, she had to make decisions about medication with her medical doctor. Lucy certainly could have talked to any one of the team members about her feelings about taking medications in general. But when she’s thinking of making changes, the psychiatrist needs to be involved.
