CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

By the time Ryu came out of surgery and was comfortably settled back in his room, it was getting on for half past eight. Visiting hours officially ended at eight o’clock, but no one had tried to make any of them leave. Maro had headed off at about five o’clock, saying he had duties to attend to back at the palace, and now that he was confident Ryu was going to be okay, a wave of tiredness hit Valentin. He stifled a yawn from his seat by the wall, which caught Emica’s attention.

“How about you and Kentario head home?” she suggested. “I’ll stay with Ryu tonight. And I’ll call you if anything important happens,” she told Kentario, anticipating his incessant need to know how Ryu was doing.

Kentario looked like he was about to argue with her, but then he glanced at Val. Perhaps, if he hadn’t been there, he would have insisted on staying. But instead, he said, “I’ll call a car. You could probably do with a decent night’s sleep.”

Half an hour later, they were both tucked into the back of a limousine, the driver having politely kept his mouth shut as he’d taken in the sight of them both. Kentario had a bandage on his arm and there was still blood smeared all over his shirt, while Val was aware of the flecks of blue paint splattered on his hands, his t-shirt old and faded, without a jacket, despite the evening’s rapidly cooling temperatures.

The driver dropped them off at the entrance to the palace, and Val got out at Kentario’s urging; apparently another night in the royal apartment was on the cards.

A guard met them at the door. “Your Highness,” he said, with a bow, as he opened the door. Then he dared to ask, “Is His Majesty…?” No doubt news of the accident had spread quickly throughout the palace staff.

But there was a sudden shift in Kentario’s posture, a stiffening of his shoulders, the flex of one powerful fist that gave Valentin a split-second warning that he was about to bite the guard’s head off. And given that the man was only expressing concern for his king, Val didn’t find that particularly fair.

“King Ryu is in a stable condition,” he butted in, delivering the news in an imperious tone that implied he had every right to do so. “He’ll be spending the night in hospital. Emica Amagarda is with him. If you wish to inform the rest of the staff, you’re welcome to do so.” Scant as the details were, he didn’t think he could get into trouble for that much.

“Thank you, sir,” the guard said with a bow.

Valentin simply led Kentario up the stairs, falling back after they were inside, since he couldn’t quite remember the way to the royal suite.

Once they reached the apartment, Kentario dropped both his shoes and jacket in the entranceway, heading straight for the kitchen and a bottle of vodka. He hadn’t even bothered turning on the light.

Valentin did it for him, closing the door as well, since it had been left open.
