Colleen Moore walked down to the front desk of the library and sitting there waiting for her was that insolent student, she had spoken to previously, who suggested she return in an hour. He was now very cooperative.

“Hey, I’m back maybe a little early but close to the hour,” she stated.

“Ah, yes, the reporter is back. What can I do for you? What do you want to know and how can I possibly help?” I asked.

“I have a few questions. Would you like to go somewhere to chat?” Moore replied.

“Sure. I just have a few things to finish up here and I’ll join you. Where shall I meet you?” I asked expectantly but with some trepidation.

“Do you know El Huevo’s?”

“I’m pretty new here, but I’ll find it. Meet you there in half hour or so.”

On the way to the restaurant, Ms. Collen Moore imagined the article she was about to write. It was obviously much different than her usual column but tantalizing nonetheless:

The Cross Killer Terrorizes L.A

After multiple deaths in New York and Massachusetts deemed at the hand of a serial killer, Los Angeles now has its first victim. A nineteen-year-old USC co-ed was found murdered in her dorm room. Although kept secret by the LAPD, the MO of this killing was very similar to the cases in New York and Beaumont, Massachusetts. The signature of the killer is a cross carved on the left chest wall over the heart of the victims. The LAPD would not say anything about the investigation although it appears that adequate DNA samples have been procured. There are no suspects and there is no murder weapon found thus far. The cases identified, thus far, are in their late teens to early twenties. There was another co-ed from Columbia University found in her dorm room. In addition, a high school senior from Beaumont, Mass was found in an isolated area in an arboretum. A mid –twenty aged woman was found on the Northeast Amtrak line on its way to the Newark Airport stop. Another twenty-something woman was found in the East Village. That victim is said to be a prostitute. Every victim’s throat was slashed. The victims were all raped, some possibly posthumously. The ritualistic identifier for all the killings is a cross carved on the left chest over the heart of the victims. The police recommend that all young women be aware of these events and take extreme precautions with strangers. The LAPD is working with the NYPD, the Beaumont sheriff’s office and the FBI to profile this killer and identify psychological characteristics that would aid in identifying this psychopath. The LAPD requests that all information volunteered be discreetly sent or called to the following number: 661-555-1221.

Her original ideas were well thought out and well written although melodramatic, but she felt that the story needed that. Not only is there a killer on the loose but a maniacal one at that. She knew the article would create panic but then again it would also create an identity for her and for her reporting.
