CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

The truck rolled to a stop. A man sitting at a fence waved to Ron and opened the gate, waving Ron to proceed. Ron smiled and moved the truck forward. Jack watched as the truck moved slowly down the long dirt road that was the driveway to the farm. It had been years since he was here. He glanced to Adrianna, who had her arm wrapped around Ashley.

“I can’t wait to see Grandma!” Ashley smiled.

Jack noticed several men with rifles patrolling the area as they drove past extensive fields of crops. “It seems the farm has grown since we were last here,” Jack said to Adrianna, who nodded.

“Many folks have gathered here. People keep coming,” Ron said and beeped at a stray cow in the road. “Damned Berta is loose again.” He stopped the truck and jumped out to move the cow out of the road.

“This is amazing.” Adrianna smiled at Jack. “I can’t believe all of this.”

“Yes, amazing.” Jack smiled back. Too good to be true, he thought.

Ron climbed back to the cab, and it was rolling again. As they turned a corner, the large farmhouse came into view. It was an old building but well maintained. Several smaller buildings had been built close by. A large barn sat behind the main building. Many people moved about the area, tending to different chores. Some folks carried guns and walked with dogs. The truck stopped, and Ashley jumped out.

“Ash, wait for us,” Adrianna called to her, but Ashley was already petting one dog.

Hanging onto a bar, Jack stepped down from the truck. His arm throbbed, and the pain was making him tired. He glanced at his arm, and he realized he’d pushed it aside for so long, but now that they stopped and it appeared they were safe, the pain had become more noticeable.

Adrianna saw his scowl and rubbed his back. “Maybe we can get you some painkillers.”

Ron motioned to the house. “Granny is in the main building. She’ll tend to you. She’s got plenty of supplies.”

Adrianna took his hand, and they walked to the front door. The smell of wood burning from the chimney invited them to get out of the cool air. Adrianna knocked at the door, and a dog howled from inside.

“Oh, shut up! I’m coming. Cats and dogs! Damn cats and dogs!”

The door opened and a familiar face greeted them, but she looked much older than Jack remembered. A fat beagle huddled near her legs.

“Grandma Ellie!” Ashley yelled and opened the screen door to give the old woman a hug.

Ellie knelt down and hugged her. A tear streamed down the old lady’s face. “My sweet girl! I’m so happy you are safe.” She looked up at Adrianna and Jack. She smiled and grabbed Adrianna’s hand, pulling her into the hug. The beagle sniffed at Jack’s feet. A moment later, it was peeing on his leg. “Stop! Stop!” Jack moved his leg away.

“She knows a good man when she sees one.” Ellie laughed and stood up to give Jack a hug.
