J anus and Sophie immediately ask why they would want to be human again, and at the same time, Filip wants to know how such a thing could be possible. Julian quiets them down and begins to tell them the story of his and Petru’s abduction by the woman in Destin and about the souls that each vampire seems to have inside them. He also goes on to tell them that we tried to trap the soul attached to his with the aid of a warlock, but that our attempt only led to that warlock’s death. He doesn’t mention my friend Gage as being our one and only warlock ally in the endeavor, nor does he mention Gerald’s name when he discusses the death of the one who tried to help us extricate the spirit trapped inside him.

“Let me get this straight,” Filip says, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table in front of him, “you’re saying that we each have the soul of one of Bathory’s victims inside us, and it’s those souls which make us vampires?”

“That’s our theory,” Julian cautiously replies. “Until we can successfully remove a soul, we won’t know for sure if that’s all that’s required to return us to our human selves.”

“And why exactly would we want to be human again?” Janus asks. It’s a question I can’t say I’m surprised to hear from him. “I’m quite happy being who and what I am. Why would I want to change that?”

“Exactly,” Sophie agrees. “I love myself just the way I am. Who in their right mind would want to be human again?”

“I want to be human again,” Julian declares.

“As do I,” Petru tells her.

“Me too,” Evie chirps.

“I suppose that makes at least four of us who want it then,” Filip says. “But something just doesn’t seem quite right about your assumption,” he tells Julian. “It almost seems too easy.”

“I don’t think the solution is going to be easy at all,” Julian replies. “Our first attempt to remove the spirit was disastrous. Our warlock friend is trying to find a different approach to the problem, but Sarah and I were hoping one of you might have an idea or know someone who might be able to help us.”

“And who’s to say that simply removing the souls we each carry will work?” Sophie questions. “The original spell that was cast on us apparently required ten people in order to work. What if we need exactly ten vampires to undo it?”

“Then our plan won’t work,” Julian says. “But we have to try.”

“No. We don’t,” Janus says resolutely as his anger grows. “I refuse to return to a deteriorating bag of skin and bones. I love being a vampire. I love not having to work for anything and getting everything I could possibly want just by compelling someone to give me all their worldly possessions. I like killing what I play with, and I love fu— ”

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I don’t get to hear the last thing that Janus likes to do because Petru quickly covers my ears like an overprotective father.
