Thanks again for a great night, and I’ll see you at next Friday’s game!

Candace

Madeline sat back, looking at the email on her screen. Madeline thought it was nice that Candace reached out to her so soon after the dinner. She seemed like a nice woman. Madeline was shocked at how small the world seems. What were the odds that her brother’s new girlfriend would have a connection to the newest victim. Madeline hated thinking of it like that, but it was the reality. She still couldn’t believe it had happened again.

Candace’s email also brought up a lot of more questions in Madeline’s mind. How well did she know the rest of the Redmond family? Was she around while Brooklyn and Alaska fought over control of the future of the company? Or was she just around the periphery?

She resolved to ask her more questions next time they got together, but she was glad it seemed like Candace wasn’t keeping secrets from her brother. This family had enough of secrets to last a lifetime.

She heard a knock on the front office door and quickly shut her computer down and pulled the shades. At the door to the office was Davis, and she waved as she made her way to the door. Since the park was closed, they would have to go to the restaurant from their main entrance.

Davis broke into a wide smile as she opened the door. Before she could flip the lock to the office, he had crushed her in a big bear hug.

“It’s good to see you, Maddie.” He whispered into her hair. “I didn’t want to wait to see you. Plus, I didn’t want you walking alone around the lot and park.”

While she appreciated his attention, she immediately wondered if something had gone wrong. “Is everything okay, Davis? Not that I mind this greeting all the time, but are you alright?” Madeline pulled away from him and flipped the lock to the front office closed. They made their way through the parking lot to the front door of the restaurant.

It was starting to get crowded, and there was a Red Sox game on that night, so she knew all the bar seats would be full. She told Davis to get a booth near the TVs and headed to the bathroom. It was a long day and she wanted to freshen up a bit before eating.

She splashed some cold water on her face from the bathroom sink. Her makeup had held up well through the long day, but then again, mascara was her usual uniform and that tended not to run. She ran her fingers through her short hair, making sure all the little flyways were smoothed down and made her way back into the restaurant.

Davis waved her over to a booth on the side of the place, and she weaved her way through the crowded tables. A few people waved, or stopped her to say hi, and by the time she had made it over to Davis, he had ordered her a Diet Coke which was waiting for her as she sat down.
