Wireless Solutions

* * *

Understanding wireless networking solutions is very important when you are planning to pass the CompTIA Network+ exam. Networks come in different shapes and sizes. Some are made up of wired and wireless networking devices. Wireless home internet is an example of wireless networking and has been used by the general public for years. With the help of wireless networking, people can interact with other networks with the help of radio waves instead of wires. You only need to stay within the range of wireless access points to access the internet and other networking services. In this chapter, you will get to understand wireless networks and how they are different from each other. We will also briefly discuss their roles, and this will help you to pass the CompTIA Network+ exam.

Wireless Frequencies and Channels

Radio frequencies play an important role in wireless communication. The band of radio frequencies is known as channels, and the wireless standards use these channels to send and receive the data packets. You need to be aware of the radio frequencies and the overlapping channels when you are troubleshooting the wireless network. All the access points are closely packed in the network, and even two separate access points on the same floor can overlap each other’s signals.

Cellular Access

We cannot imagine our world without cell phones. Possibly one-third of the world’s communication is made via cellphones. Code division-multiple access was used for the global system of mobile communication as an application to provide cell phone coverage. With the advancement in research, multiple user interfaces were designed and implemented on the market. Some of the individual methods for cellular communication include Edge, 3G, LTE/4G.

Speed, Bandwidth, and Distance

When wireless transmission is discussed, a person needs to differentiate between the data rate and the throughput. One might get confused between the terms as they are closely related, but they are entirely different things. Every wireless networking device and technology operates at its speed. The 802.11n has a speed of 600 Mbps, and the 802.11ac has a theoretical speed of 1300 Mbps. Many things can alter the speed and become a hindrance to data transmission.

The speed of the wireless device also depends upon the number of users on the network. When more users are on the network, there will be more collisions, and this will impact the transmission speed. The wireless signals will also disrupt when they pass through a wall and doors. In practical terms, the wireless transmission is normally one-third or one-half of the theoretical maximum. Channel bonding is the phenomenon by which you can use two channels at the same time. With the help of channel bonding, you can increase the speed of the data transmission.

Antenna Ratings and Coverage

When the antenna is not providing enough coverage, and the data speed is also lackluster, you might be thinking of changing the antenna, but how will a network administrator know which antenna will work best? You will know that a general antenna emits the signals in the form of a sphere.
