Syntax and Semantics

In order to analyze any piece of data, we need to understand both the syntax and the semantics of that data. If you know the format of data but not its meaning, then any analysis will be, quite literally, meaningless. If you know the meaning of a piece of data but not its format, you will find it difficult or impossible to analyze the piece of data. As a simple example, consider a piece of data that represents the latitude of a geospatial position. Latitude can be represented in any of several ways.
