Chapter 19

“WOW, YOU GIRLS ARE sure pretty tonight.” Lucas might’ve been saying that to all of us but he only looked at Britney. “How did you get changed so fast? I thought it took girls forever to do all that hair and makeup stuff.”

Ren scowled then glared at Aran.

“What’s going on here?” Mr. Norton grabbed my arm and pulled me out to the entrance hall. Well away from Aran.

“Let me get this straight. You let Aran use a glamour to change your outfit?”

“Yep. You didn’t tell us we’d need some cool clothes for these dinners. We had to—”

“You do not ever let him do that again. Especially for something so frivolous. Really, I expected better from you.”

Footsteps echoed across the hallway. I turned to see Ren.

“Why? Why can’t I be frivolous and want some nice clothes once in a while? Any other girl my age would do it. I’m sure most of these girls use magic to get what they want, fashion-wise at least. So yeah, I didn’t want to look like some poor charity case at dinner. Is that so bad?”

“Yes. Yes, Cherry, it is. Because you are missing the main point here. You don’t let vampires do those kinds of things.”

“Yep, especially that one.” Ren jumped in front of me, all accusing eyes. “He’s way too good-looking to be trusted.”

“Well, what does that make you then?”

Ren smirked. “You think I’m better looking than Aran?”

Drats, I’d played right into his hands.

“Nope. You know why? Because Aran doesn’t have a black eye like the one you’re about to get.”

Mr. Norton jumped between us, pulling us apart. “Again, missing the main point.”

“Surely we can trust Aran.” I pouted. “He’s like a brother to me. A really hot and not annoying brother.”

Ren sneered so I sneered right back. But he couldn’t hold the sneer, not without his lips twitching.

“We all need to take care but especially you.” Mr. Norton pursed his lips. “You can’t let the vampires in any more than they already are.”

“Are you sure this isn’t more of that vampire prejudice?”

“You should listen to Mr. Norton, Cherry.” Ren folded his arms. “And really, what does it matter what you wear. It’s just clothes.”

I snorted. “That’s rich coming from you, Rich Boy. Not that long ago, you wouldn’t have been caught dead in something without a label on it.”

“And now I’ve grown as a person. It’s something you should take on board...”

But I wasn’t listening because something moving in the hallway leading to the kitchen caught my attention. Had someone been spying on us? They moved so fast that I could only see a blur.

When we got back inside, our plates had been cleared. Rude. I hadn’t finished eating yet.

“Can you see Campbell?” Ren asked. “I want to talk to that guy.”

Before we could spot him, Mrs. Hamer swooped.

“Ah, Ren, thankfully you’re here. We can’t present the trophies without our main hero.”

She grabbed Ren and took him to a podium that must’ve been set up while we were out of the room.
