CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"With all the commotion, with police around, would he really have tried to flee? Or would he have hidden somewhere?" Caitlin asked in a low voice as Nathan caught up with her, looking inquiringly at her as if wondering why she was heading out into the dark.

She was pacing through the station, shining her flashlight in every direction, keeping the description of his build and clothing in her mind.

"Also, he was pepper sprayed," Nathan added thoughtfully. "That wouldn't have made it easy for him to run. If he caught some of that spray, got it in his lungs, he might be laying low and waiting to recover."

That was an excellent point. After all, the witness who'd discovered Jan Evans, had said her attacker had been coughing. He might have gotten enough pepper spray in his lungs that he couldn't run. That stuff was horrible. Being pepper sprayed was one of the tests that FBI agents had to pass, before qualifying. Caitlin found her eyes watering in sympathy as she remembered those agonizing, stinging moments that had felt like an eternity.

What could this killer be doing right now? How could they find him?

"He might be armed," Nathan reminded her.

That was also a point. Caitlin put her other hand on her gun's grip. She didn't want to be surprised that way. Strangulation was a silent method of killing, because obviously he didn't want to draw attention to what he was doing on a train, but that didn't mean he couldn't be carrying a weapon.

They took the platform by platform approach, shining the flashlights onto every surface, checking every open room, looking in all the restrooms, all the store rooms, trying every door they found, and making sure that none were locked from the inside.

Caitlin looked under the piles of tarps, behind a pile of stacked girders, and even climbed onto the railing to check the roof of a utility room. But there was no sign of him.

Then, they widened their search, walking outside the station, checking the road.

"He could be escaping on foot, and I wonder if anyone might have seen a man coughing," Caitlin said, striding down the road. Nathan was keeping pace with her. But in the dark, the road looked quiet, and the homes were set well back. Unfortunately, if he had been coughing, he’d have been able to cough and hack the whole way through this small town without anyone hearing, she acknowledged.

"He could have run off into the desert, and be laying low there," Nathan said.

She knew that was a very real possibility. The side roads led into bushy, scrubby wilderness and it would be easy for him to hide. They couldn't stray into the wilderness, it was simply too vast. If he was hiding out here, then there was nothing they could do. He might have known this station, and thought about how to get away, or maybe he had a plan to get off at this stop all along. Worst case, he’d had a vehicle parked nearby and had simply climbed into it.
