Chapter Nineteen
With the holidays a joyful memory, life returned to a semblance of normalcy around the Harper place. Raine went back to editing the stacks of manuscripts from Gordon. Before leaving Phoenix sheâd had her mail forwarded to his office then he would send it to the P.O. Box rented under Coraâs name. Gordon was also keeping her updated regarding Addisonâs release. The last time theyâd spoken was the weekend before Christmas. âNothingâs changed since you were here,â referring to her trip to Phoenix after Thanksgiving. âI do know dear old mom and pops spent Thanksgiving at the jail, even catered dinner for everyone.â
âAwe, wasnât that special.â Sarcasm coated each word. Leave it to Addison to have all the comforts of home. âI hope your spy-man got plenty to eat.â
âOh, he did.â Gordon chuckled. âHeâs working as a janitor at the jail. Not only did he get plenty to eat, but he also got an earful of bitching about you.â
âI can only imagine. Just make sure he knows heâll be well compensated. Itâs too bad he canât find a way to spike Addisonâs food with some rat poison.â She was surely going to hell for wishing Addison dead, but at least heâd be permanently out of her life.
âYou sound just like your sidekick. She said the same thing. I half-way expected her to even buy the poison.â
âAnd thatâs why sheâs my bestie. Great minds think alike. By the way I found a place just up the road that you and my bestie can relocate to.â
âAnd have you two getting knee-deep in trouble again!â He joked. In better days his wife and Raine had been partners in mischief, but that was before Addison had taken the slithery slide to hell ruining everyoneâs good time. âThereâs a package on its way. You should be getting it pretty soon.â
âGood. I canât remember when Iâve had so much fun during Christmas. Itâll be nice getting back to workâand some normalcy.â Well, as normal as life could be given the circumstances.
âThings would get back to normal quicker if Addison went missing the day he walked free. Under less watchful circumstances my guy could make that happen, and Iâm not talking rat poison.â
âGood luck with that. At least weâll be notified when heâs due to be released. He wants his pound of flesh. So, you can bet he wonât waste any time hunting me down. And you know whatâI want him to. Iâm tired of looking over my shoulder. I want this over, one way or another.â
An edginess in her tone set alarm bells ringing in Gordonâs head. Was she thinking of doing something reckless? Thus far, sheâd been cautious, but a person could only be pushed so far. Surely she wouldnâtââentice,â for lack of a better wordâAddison to her door. Of course she wouldnât, but sheâd given him pause for concern. âDonât do anything stupid!â He cautioned sternly.
âDonât you think that warning comes a little too late? Stupid started when I kept my mouth shut about the things he was doing.
