Chapter Nineteen

With the holidays a joyful memory, life returned to a semblance of normalcy around the Harper place. Raine went back to editing the stacks of manuscripts from Gordon. Before leaving Phoenix she’d had her mail forwarded to his office then he would send it to the P.O. Box rented under Cora’s name. Gordon was also keeping her updated regarding Addison’s release. The last time they’d spoken was the weekend before Christmas. “Nothing’s changed since you were here,” referring to her trip to Phoenix after Thanksgiving. “I do know dear old mom and pops spent Thanksgiving at the jail, even catered dinner for everyone.”

“Awe, wasn’t that special.” Sarcasm coated each word. Leave it to Addison to have all the comforts of home. “I hope your spy-man got plenty to eat.”

“Oh, he did.” Gordon chuckled. “He’s working as a janitor at the jail. Not only did he get plenty to eat, but he also got an earful of bitching about you.”

“I can only imagine. Just make sure he knows he’ll be well compensated. It’s too bad he can’t find a way to spike Addison’s food with some rat poison.” She was surely going to hell for wishing Addison dead, but at least he’d be permanently out of her life.

“You sound just like your sidekick. She said the same thing. I half-way expected her to even buy the poison.”

“And that’s why she’s my bestie. Great minds think alike. By the way I found a place just up the road that you and my bestie can relocate to.”

“And have you two getting knee-deep in trouble again!” He joked. In better days his wife and Raine had been partners in mischief, but that was before Addison had taken the slithery slide to hell ruining everyone’s good time. “There’s a package on its way. You should be getting it pretty soon.”

“Good. I can’t remember when I’ve had so much fun during Christmas. It’ll be nice getting back to work—and some normalcy.” Well, as normal as life could be given the circumstances.

“Things would get back to normal quicker if Addison went missing the day he walked free. Under less watchful circumstances my guy could make that happen, and I’m not talking rat poison.”

“Good luck with that. At least we’ll be notified when he’s due to be released. He wants his pound of flesh. So, you can bet he won’t waste any time hunting me down. And you know what—I want him to. I’m tired of looking over my shoulder. I want this over, one way or another.”

An edginess in her tone set alarm bells ringing in Gordon’s head. Was she thinking of doing something reckless? Thus far, she’d been cautious, but a person could only be pushed so far. Surely she wouldn’t—“entice,” for lack of a better word—Addison to her door. Of course she wouldn’t, but she’d given him pause for concern. “Don’t do anything stupid!” He cautioned sternly.

“Don’t you think that warning comes a little too late? Stupid started when I kept my mouth shut about the things he was doing.
