As Eva made her way back to the cabin, her cell phone chimed with her roommate’s unique ringtone. A flutter of ill ease stirred inside her. Carnegie!

“Is my boy okay?” she said, bypassing a greeting.

“He’s fine,” Kara said. “He misses you. He spent hours last night in your room, meowing and looking for you.”

“Aw, I miss him too.” A small, hollow ache tugged at her heart as she thought of her feline companion. “Hug him for me.”

“I will. I have. How’s the swanky cruise with that hot partner of yours going?”

“It’s been...crazy.” Eva stopped at a deck chair and filled Kara in on the events of the last few days that weren’t considered confidential to the ongoing investigations. When she mentioned the retreat-exercise kiss she’d shared with Carmine, Kara whooped with laughter. “Oh my God! And? Is he a good kisser?”

Eva buried her face in her hand, admitting softly, “Fantastic, actually.”

Kara gave another excited whoop. “What a dream come true for you! A ready-made, work-sanctioned excuse to lock lips with the guy you’ve been into for months... Lucky girl!”

“Hardly! It’s a nightmare!”

“What? How is it a nightmare?”

Eva raised her head and gazed out across the harbor where the yacht had docked for the day. A lone seagull swooped and dove toward the water. “Because now I know exactly what I’m missing. And...well, the exercise was for troubled couples, right? It was supposed to create intimacy and closeness. And... I think it has. For me. All his staged touches and our constant proximity is making me...fall for him. Really fall for him. Not just crushing from afar but...feelings.”

“And that’s a problem?”

“It is if he doesn’t feel the same way.” She sighed. “Besides, we work together. A precinct romance would be...wrong somehow. I don’t think we could do it. Or that it would be allowed.”

“Hey! The NYPD can’t tell you who you can or can’t have a relationship with!” Kara said hotly.

“They kind of can. There are policies in place.” If only she weren’t such a stickler for rules... “I mean, maybe if one of us moved to another precinct or department...” The wind blew her hair in her face, and she combed it out of her face with her fingers. “Moot point. It takes two to tango, and Carmine...” She thought of the way he’d bolted from their room the night before. “I don’t think we are on the same page. He was kind of distant last night after the kiss happened. As in, he left the room for a long time so he didn’t have to face me.”

“Well, I don’t know what that was about,” Kara said, “but I think you have an opportunity here if you don’t blow it.”

“An opportunity for what? Humiliating myself?”

“Winning him over,” Kara said, her tone enthused. “Use what nature gave you, Eva. You’ve got the looks, the brain, the good heart... You’re the whole package.”

Eva smiled. “Thanks. Any chance you want to marry me?”

“I’m serious, E. Granted, I only met him once, but he seemed like the real deal.
