Chapter 9
Ellie heard Sean and Liam arguing before she even finished getting dressed. She hadnât gotten to her phone in time, because Sean had clearly ended the call when heâd realized she was right there in Liamâs apartment.
Shaking her head, she finished doing her makeup before getting dressed. Then she took the shower cap off her hair, carefully brushed it out and put in her earrings. Satisfied that she looked polished and put together, she opened the door and sauntered out into the living room. The click of her heels announced her arrival.
Both men stopped talking the moment she emerged.
âGood morning,â she said, walking past them toward the kitchen and heading straight for the coffee pot. While she waited for her cup to brew, she turned and eyed Sean. âI take it Liam told you about what happened to my apartment yesterday?â
âHe did. Why didnât you call it in?â
âBecause I knew youâd want to handle it personally.â Her coffee finished and she headed toward the fridge to grab the milk. Once sheâd finished doctoring it, she looked up to find Sean staring at her. as if he couldnât understand why she was there.
âWhat?â she asked, realizing heâd noticed how comfortable she felt in Liamâs kitchen.
âNothing.â Sean took a long drink of his own coffee. âWhen you get in to work today, call the precinct and make a report, okay?â
âI will,â she promised.
âGood. Iâll give them a heads-up to expect your call.â Sean took a few steps back and then glanced at Liam. âNo need to show me out. I know the way. Talk to you later.â
A moment later, they heard the front door close and he was gone.
âWhatâs up with him?â she asked, though she sort of already knew. âWhy is he acting so weird?â
âHeâs not sure how to handle the idea of the two of us together,â Liam said. âHe can be overprotective with people he really cares about.â
Not quite sure how to take that, she frowned. âDoes he think Iâm going to hurt you or something? I know youâre his younger brother, but youâre also a grown-ass man.â
To her surprise, her comment made Liam laugh. âItâs not me heâs worried about,â he finally said. âItâs you. Iâve already been given a stern talking to about that. He doesnât want you hurt.â
Strangely relieved, yet also intrigued, she eyed him. âWhy would he worry about that? Do you make a habit of hurting women?â
âOf course not.â
The promptness of his answer reassured her.
âI always have an understanding with the women I date,â he continued. âGoing in, they know up front itâs not going to be serious. No one gets hurt.â
She nodded, though she had no idea why hearing about him with other women stung. They certainly had never even discussed an exclusive relationship, nor did she want to. Not serious meant exactly that.
When she didnât comment, Liam shrugged. âSean doesnât get it. He thinks itâs all me, that Iâm a love âem and leave âem kind of guy.â
âA regular heartbreaker then,â she said dryly.
