Chapter 9

Ellie heard Sean and Liam arguing before she even finished getting dressed. She hadn’t gotten to her phone in time, because Sean had clearly ended the call when he’d realized she was right there in Liam’s apartment.

Shaking her head, she finished doing her makeup before getting dressed. Then she took the shower cap off her hair, carefully brushed it out and put in her earrings. Satisfied that she looked polished and put together, she opened the door and sauntered out into the living room. The click of her heels announced her arrival.

Both men stopped talking the moment she emerged.

“Good morning,” she said, walking past them toward the kitchen and heading straight for the coffee pot. While she waited for her cup to brew, she turned and eyed Sean. “I take it Liam told you about what happened to my apartment yesterday?”

“He did. Why didn’t you call it in?”

“Because I knew you’d want to handle it personally.” Her coffee finished and she headed toward the fridge to grab the milk. Once she’d finished doctoring it, she looked up to find Sean staring at her. as if he couldn’t understand why she was there.

“What?” she asked, realizing he’d noticed how comfortable she felt in Liam’s kitchen.

“Nothing.” Sean took a long drink of his own coffee. “When you get in to work today, call the precinct and make a report, okay?”

“I will,” she promised.

“Good. I’ll give them a heads-up to expect your call.” Sean took a few steps back and then glanced at Liam. “No need to show me out. I know the way. Talk to you later.”

A moment later, they heard the front door close and he was gone.

“What’s up with him?” she asked, though she sort of already knew. “Why is he acting so weird?”

“He’s not sure how to handle the idea of the two of us together,” Liam said. “He can be overprotective with people he really cares about.”

Not quite sure how to take that, she frowned. “Does he think I’m going to hurt you or something? I know you’re his younger brother, but you’re also a grown-ass man.”

To her surprise, her comment made Liam laugh. “It’s not me he’s worried about,” he finally said. “It’s you. I’ve already been given a stern talking to about that. He doesn’t want you hurt.”

Strangely relieved, yet also intrigued, she eyed him. “Why would he worry about that? Do you make a habit of hurting women?”

“Of course not.”

The promptness of his answer reassured her.

“I always have an understanding with the women I date,” he continued. “Going in, they know up front it’s not going to be serious. No one gets hurt.”

She nodded, though she had no idea why hearing about him with other women stung. They certainly had never even discussed an exclusive relationship, nor did she want to. Not serious meant exactly that.

When she didn’t comment, Liam shrugged. “Sean doesn’t get it. He thinks it’s all me, that I’m a love ’em and leave ’em kind of guy.”

“A regular heartbreaker then,” she said dryly.
