It didn’t take her long to get ready.

Hilary didn’t have an extensive morning routine and she cut a few corners today to save time. That meant no makeup, and her hair thrown back in a ponytail. A few months ago, she would have cringed at the thought of being around Oliver without looking her best, but after the events of the past twenty-four hours her priorities had shifted.

Now she stared out the window of the car, watching the familiar sights of Blue Larkspur pass by without really seeing them. She still couldn’t believe Oliver was going to pay Jeff’s ransom—she’d known he was well-off, but the fact that he apparently thought nothing of shelling out that kind of money for someone he’d never met made her realize he was richer than she’d initially imagined.

His gesture had made her feel simultaneously relieved and unsettled. Even though Oliver had insisted he was making a deal with her brother, she still felt beholden to him. Without his generosity, her parents would have had to sell Atria, and who knows if they would have been able to raise the funds in time?

A small voice in her head wondered at Oliver’s true motivations. He’d said he wanted to take the stress off of her, for the baby’s sake. It sounded sweet, but what if there was more to it than that? What if Oliver was going to use this as a way to exert control over her and later, their child?

He’d never seemed particularly controlling before, but now that he was going to be a father, maybe that would change?

She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. He appeared relaxed, totally at ease as he drove them through Blue Larkspur. Did the man ever get flustered? He always projected an air of calm confidence, as though he was prepared to handle anything that might come his way.

Paying a ransom to get his baby mama’s brother back? No problem.

Alien invasion? Just another day at the office.

What is that like? she wondered. More importantly, how could she develop that attitude for herself? Because right now, she was feeling all kinds of stressed.

“It’s going to be okay.” His deep voice broke the silence and cut through her thoughts.

Was he a mind reader now, too? “I know,” she said, sounding a little defensive even to herself.

His hand came over hers, large and warm and comforting. “I can feel the tension coming off your body. It can’t be good for you.”

“Because of the baby, right?” Hilary didn’t mean to lash out, but more and more, it felt like Oliver only cared about the pregnancy. While she was glad he was interested and had plans to be an involved father, she was more than just a vessel for his child. If people were going to spend the next months treating her like spun glass, she might not make it through this experience with her sanity intact.

To her surprise, Oliver yanked the steering wheel to the right and made a sharp turn into an empty parking lot.
