Chapter 19

Sidra dropped her book bag into the trunk of Chasity’s car. “I need for spring break to hurry up and get here,” she complained. “I’m over these stupid research papers.”

Malajia chuckled as she opened the back door. “I’d take that over History any day,” she jeered. “If I have to read about anything else from the sixteenth century, I’m gonna slap something.”

“Get in the car now, or I’m pulling off without you,” Chasity warned, starting the car up.

“All right, cranky,” Sidra giggled, settling into the passenger seat. “I know Alex is waiting for us anyway.”

Just as Malajia stepped her foot in the car, she noticed Mark making his way through the parking lot. “What the hell is your black ass doing over here?” Malajia sneered at him.

“Damn Malajia!” Sidra exclaimed. Malajia could be so belligerent at times; it really rubbed Sidra the wrong way.

“Damn Malajia, what?” Malajia scoffed. “He know he black.”

Mark made a face at Malajia as he approached the car. “Always gotta be the asshole,” he spat.

“Whatever,” Malajia returned. “Where are you going?” she asked, noticing the overnight bag in Mark’s hand.

Mark threw his head back and groaned loudly. “I’m going home for the weekend. I’m meeting my ride over here.”

Sidra stuck her head out of the window. “What did you do, Mark?”

Mark sucked his teeth. “Why you gotta assume that I did something?”

“Because it’s you,” Malajia cut in, before dissolving in a fit of laughter. “You salty, you gotta go home on a Friday. You on punishment and shit.”

Too angry to think of a quick retort, Mark stood there gritting his teeth.

Irritated with being held up, Chasity honked her horn, startling them both. “Get in the damn car, Malajia!” she ordered. Not saying another word, Malajia sat in the car as Mark stormed off in search of his ride.

“It’s about time,” Alex joked, putting her hands on her hips. It’d been nearly an hour since she called the girls to have them meet her at the Pizza Shack.

“It’s Sidra’s fault,” Malajia said, approaching the empty booth that Alex had reserved for them.

Sidra’s mouth fell open. “I had to finish my paper,” she argued. “What was your excuse for making us wait after I got back from the library?”

Malajia sucked her teeth as she removed her coat. “I was doing my hair,” she mumbled.

“What was that?” Sidra pressed, putting her hand to her ear.

“I was doing my damn hair, okay?” Malajia barked. “You already know I need to get my curls just right.”

“Okay, none of that is important,” Alex cut in, sitting down. “You’re here now.”

“Why are we here?” Chasity asked tiredly. The last thing she felt like doing was sitting in a pizza parlor. She would much rather be in bed after the week that she had. Having major assignments due and quizzes in all five of her classes that week had taken its toll.

“Well, I wanted to talk to you about Emily’s upcoming birthday,” Alex revealed, removing a large gold hoop from her ear. “It’s in a few weeks.
