Dan Woolley

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, January 13, 2010

Hours had passed since Sarla had made contact. Yet no one had returned for them.

“Maybe they can’t find her location?” Dan called out to Jim. “Perhaps we should start banging again?”

Jim said, “Here we go! One, two, three. HELP!”

Dan screamed with them and used a chunk of concrete to bang against the elevator.

It felt like no one was ever going to come back for them. Dan decided to use a bit of phone battery to write a few last messages to his family.

I think I will likely pass to heaven tonight or tomorrow. The rescuers have not returned — likely too difficult a rescue and too many other, easier needs.

If I die know that I fell asleep without pain.

That last sentence was not entirely true. He was in pain, but it wasn’t agonizing. He didn’t want his wife to be left with an image of him in agony.

I will always love you.
